Part 63: Cheeseburger In Paradise

Aw, she said yes!

Violet waves goodbye and leaves, presumably to get ready for the picnic. Daniel holds it together until she's gone...

... and then goes all goobly with wuv. And with that, the party breaks up.

But what's this? Now Poppy needs our help?

Let's go talk to Poppy.

: Oh, hi Sam. I'd love to give Daniel some flowers, but they're all dried up! Think you could help me get them a nice cool drink?

What? Overhead irrigation systems too old-fashioned for you?

Well, fine!

doop de doo

Forget mere overwatering, we're gonna wash some roses out to sea. Still, Poppy's happy.

... frankly, the idea of wearing something that Poppy gave me is sort of... unnerving.

Anyway, Poppy goes into her garden and roots around for a second, then comes back and gives Daniel his bouquet. Aaaaand here it turns out that I have actually broken the game! Daniel was supposed to ask Sam to find him a Dark Pearl to give to Violet as a present. By opening the clam and finding the pearl before Daniel asks for it, I trick the game into skipping right to the end of that quest instead of first giving it to me and then ending it again. Let's just pretend he asked for it.

: Oh wow! It's as beautiful as she is! I'm sure she'll love it. Thanks so much, Sam.

Daniel calms down a little.

: Well, guess I actually have to go talk to her now...

And off he goes, heading for the picnic area. Sam has a feeling he'll be required here, so he heads along to chaperone.

: Here, Violet. These are for you!

Violet is surprised and happy.

: Oh, these look just like Poppy's flowers...

: Oh, uh, yeah. And I got you this, too!

: I have to admit, Sam helped me out a lot! It's so great having a Wandolier in the kingdom again.

Daniel turns to gesture at the picnic grounds.

um

Aaaand here the game just sort of breaks again, as Daniel does not actually tell me about the quest before the quest starts. He doesn't want those rowdy torso-sized spiders to ruin his picnic, you see.

Spiders will run away from Sam, so he can chase them away from the picnic grounds.

First there is one spider, then there are two, and finally there are three. If one of them gets too close to the blanket, Daniel freaks out and runs away, temporarily ruining the date. (Violet continues to eat peacefully even when she has three spiders climbing all over her.) The goal of the minigame is to keep the spiders away long enough for Daniel and Violet to 'finish their date'--to run through the entire picnic animation, which lasts for a little over a minute.

As readers have pointed out upthread, this quest is a bastard if you play it straight. The spiders move just as fast as Sam does and can do end runs like no one's business. What helps is thinking outside the box.

One way to do it is to fence off all but one exit and then chase the spiders out of the area. With only one exit to guard, Sam can usually do the job.

Alternately, he can pen them up in the corners, which is good enough for Daniel.

There. It's all good.

Mostly good.

: Don't tell Buddy I said that, okay?

While we were off talking to our friends, Daniel and Violet successfully had a date!

Violet looks bashful for a moment, then sidles a bit closer. Oh goodness. Are they gonna--

--nope.

While Beverly distracts her son, Spencer grabs Violet by the arm and tows her off.

Noooooo!

Sam hears the commotion and runs in.

: Sam! She's gone too far! She took Violet!

He waves a hand.

: They went that way!

The chase is on!
