Myth III

by GuavaMoment

Part 1: Introduction

Myth 3: The Wolf Age is a real-time tactical game similar to the combat of real-time strategy games like WarCraft/StarCraft. The big difference is that the Myth series is all about combat. No making new units, no structures to be built, no creeping for XP, no tech tree. You're given a bunch of units each mission, and you must use those units to the best of your ability, pitting your strengths against enemy weakness, and utilizing battle formations to ensure you meet the enemy exactly the way you want to.

The previous games, Myth: The Fallen Lords and Myth 2: Soulblighter have highly active communities with people still playing the multiplayer aspect of the game. Many different groups still release new maps and patches to keep the game running on modern systems.

Not so for Myth 3. The Myth fanbase at large consider it a terrible, and badly coded game. You're probably here because you've played Myth 1 or 2 and heard this game is terrible.

You've heard this game is terrible, but how many of you reading this have played it, and given it a chance? I believe so few people have that Myth 3's reputation is undeserved.

Myth 3 acts as a prequel to the events on Myth 1. Chronologically it comes first so there's nothing wrong with jumping right in to this game first. However the real draw of the story is that we are going to be participating in important events that were mentioned in Myth 1 but not actually seen. If you want to catch up on the events of Myth: The Fallen Lords you have two options. The first is one of the greatest LP's I've ever seen, done by Johnny Law. In fact you're going to notice a lot of similarity between this LP and the way Johnny Law did his. I highly, highly recommend watching this LP at some point in your life.

If watching all that's too much to ask, I've summarized the important details as best I could in the following video.

Blip videos are converted from mp4 to flv for high-quality download needs. Videos on Blip are also ad-free.
YouTube videos on HD don't look half bad, and can be used on lower quality settings for those with bandwidth issues

Myth 2: Soulblighter is a sequel to the events in Myth: The Fallen Lords, and has almost no impact on the story of Myth 3. It can be ignored for now.

During this LP I will be playing through the campaign on Mighty (medium) difficulty aiming for low friendly casualties. I won't be using reduced in-game speeds, and I'm going to try very hard not to save/load in the middle of missions. There are going to be a couple of exceptions, but this will be explained in more detail in the video for Mission 2.

Spoiler Rules

The following are NOT spoilers - anything that happens in Myth 1, minor details of Myth 2, and the major events of Myth 3 that I've put in the introduction video (eg we defeat the Trow).

Please spoiler tag events and details from Myth 2. Or better yet not post about them!

Please do not post at all any of the details of the major events of this game, like who The Head is, or how we specifically defeat the Trow. I believe most people here haven't played Myth 3 and I would like for things not to be spoiled at all for them.

It is over 1000 years before the Great War against Balor and the Fallen Lords. Creatures called Myrkridia have almost caused the extinction of the human race. Legends speak of a hero being born under the tail of a flaming comet that will save the world. This comet has appeared in the night sky…
