Part 3: Chapter 1-3

So we arrive at the dark and foreboding parking lot of the FBI. I tell ya, this place is creepier than the entire last murder scene.

Not a ton to do down here yet, except head to the elevator…

…which is operating on videogame logic of only letting you go to the floor that’s plot relevant.

A bit of hot waiting in an elevator action later…

And we’re where we need to be. Nothing relevant in this hallway quite yet, but to our left…

…is our favorite bumbling cop. No, the other one. No, the other one.

“Christ, I don’t even want to go there. (Sigh) I mean what is it with these idiots who buy 20 lottery tickets anyway? I mean do they really have to waste everyone’s time? God! They piss me off. I just wanted a pack of gum, too. Hey, last time I saw you; you were limping to your car. Are you okay?"

Jesus tapdancing Christ, woman, it was a simple question.

“Oh, I almost forgot…is everything okay with your girlfriend?”

What, was she in the house watching Miller molest…

Oh.

“I promise. So what are you up to?”

“You know Miller? You do have your moments. Anything I can do to help with the report?”

“Well, OK, see you later.”

Immediately harassing Miller again…

“Hey, thanks a lot for doing the report.”

“Maybe I should call your girlfriend and tell her how wonderful you are.”

“Where’s the damn evidence chute again?”

Come on Vickie, don’t you work here?

Anyway, before we do that, Vickie’s desk is by yonder magnifying glass cursor. She has a message on her answering machine.

Todd is Todd Browning, your token obstructive police chief for this adventure. We’ll deal with him in a bit.

“Yes, you would…wouldn’t you?”

Meow. Grab that card and gift box on Vickie’s desk, they’ll be needed. After that, the files on the right can be peeped at for some slightly more detailed…er, details on our first four murder victims.

It’s kind of difficult to make out the text in these things, but…

Checa, Roslyn
Witnesses: Chicago Police Department Officer Victor Chow was present at the autopsy.

Opinion: The cause of death is drowning. Blunt trauma to the head likely the result of the decedent’s struggles, while bruising of the throat and larynx the result of the assailant’s efforts to choke or control the decedent. Both occurred prior to death.

Semen was found in the decedent’s vagina, but there were no indications of forced penetration.

Toxicology tests revealed both an elevated blood alcohol level (0.12) and the presence of Rohypnol, which combined with alcohol would likely have incapacitated the decedent. Trace levels of THC were also detected.

The mode of death is HOMICIDE.

So Roslyn was boozed up, Roofied and then choked and drowned in a toilet. Lovely.

Walmsley, Elizabeth

Witnesses: CPD Detective Frank (illegible) was present at the autopsy.

Opinion: The cause of death is drowning by total immersion. Bruising of the throat the result of the assailant’s efforts to choke or control the decedent. Scratches to decedent’s arms, torso and face likely inflicted by the assailant during the murder. Both occurred prior to death.

No evidence of sexual assault.

Toxicology tests revealed both an elevated blood alcohol level (0.14) and the presence of Rohypnol, which combined with alcohol, would likely have incapacitated the decedent.

The mode of death is HOMICIDE.

Boozed up, Roofied, then went for a swim in a rooftop apartment pool where she was strangled and drowned. Next…

…well that’s just nasty.

Braeme, Shannon

Witnesses: Chicago Police Department Detective Matt Ryan was present at the autopsy.

Opinion: The cause of death is drowning. Bruising of the throat representative of use of force by the perpetrator to control the decedent, and occurred prior to death.

Toxicology tests revealed both an elevated blood alcohol level (0.13) and the presence of Rohypnol, which combined with alcohol would have incapacitated the decedent.

The mode of death is HOMICIDE.

Boozed up, Roofied, drowned in her apartment bathtub. Vickie gets called in here. Next…

Kenworth, Natalie

Witnesses: FBI Special Agent Victoria McPherson was present at the autopsy.

Opinion: Bruising of the throat and damage to the trachea occurred prior to death, and were inflicted by the pillowcase used as a ligature. Evisceration performed post-mortem, and would unquestionably have proved fatal as well.

Toxicology tests revealed both an elevated blood alcohol level (0.14) and the presence of Rohypnol, which combined with alcohol, would have incapacitated the decedent.

The mode of death is HOMICIDE.

Boozed up, Roofied…strangled by a pillowcase, somehow ended up a sewer, where the killer went to town with a blade. And yet she somehow looks happy in that picture.

Back in the hallway, we’ll just head over to where the cursor is to find…

…thanks, Vickie. Camera goes in there.

Now it’s just over to the elevator, and…

RIPPER AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH…no, wait, it’s the best character ever, Deputy Dawg.

“Officer Tate?”

“All right. So how did you guys get the body down?”

Yes, where they…fell. Not where Vickie broke them by being a gigantic klutz.

“Hum…well, I hope no one got hurt.”

And with that, Tate wanders off to go join Miller in doing nothing important. Back to the elevator, where floor B2 is magically available now that it’s relevant to go there.

Down here are a few things of note. First we’ll head through the door on the left to find…

…the security room. Over on the left by yonder cursor is…

NERD!

Elsewhere, the security monitor can be observed, but nothing is going on right now. Though I have a sinking feeling that view is going to lead to a scare later. The only other thing of note in the room is the trash bin, which we can examine.

Yeah, so does your police work.

Back out of the room and to the right takes us to a hallway that leads to the bathrooms.

But Vickie is having none of co-ed toilets. Given what our killer has been up to, maybe she’s genre savvy.

Anyway, the place we need to be is north. Up there is a keypad locked door. Well, that’s fine, we did just grab our security card upstairs on the desk. Just a swipe of that, and…

…yeah, that would be too easy. Welcome to our first inane puzzle of the game. Although to be fair, this one at least kind of makes sense. Later ones won’t.

There is a new memo to go with the coroner’s reports regarding your keycard. How would you know this? By accidentally stumbling onto it while looking at your menu. It springs up when you take the card from the desk but there’s no real prompt that it’s happened or anything.

Never disclose your PIN under any circumstances. Report any lost or stolen cards immediately.

Fuck you.

Anyway, in your inventory is your keycard.

Flipping that over reveals a cryptic “No Vodka” and a mysterious 583 that means nothing. Seriously, I have no idea what that is even for other than making you waste time putting in numbers you don’t need.

Because I am an idiot, I wasted a hearty amount of time putting in the numbers that matched up to “No Vodka” on the keypad here (as well as any combination of 583 when that didn’t work). Plain old “Vodka”, meaning 86352 gets you in.

Only place to go in the next hallway is to the left, where Claire is waiting alongside the mangled corpse of Jack.

“Hey Claire! Get that preliminary lab work done?”

“For you, always.”

Annnnnd we’re dumped into a video as Claire narrates just how the Ripper fucked over Jack. Warning: Boobies and blood.

“I’m thinking these mutilations will get worse. It wasn’t part of his MO for the first three victims. They were found beaten and drowned. Not…like this…”

“No, I don’t think so. Drowning his victims seems to be his focus. That stage in the assault is very important to him. No, this stabbing business is from something else. (Sigh) I have a feeling that if we knew what it was, we would catch the son of a bitch. Also, he covered the face of the 4th victim and now this one. This strongly suggests that he knew the last two victims. I’ll ask Miller to correlate the last two victim’s info.”

“I’ve been meaning to ask you…did you call her?”

Well, that’s quite a non-sequitur, Vickie.

Really.

“Sure but promise me that you will call her!”

Now can we get back to work and not whatever the hell that was?

“How about you…did you come up with anything interesting?”

“Very nice…did you compare it to the partial you found from the 4th crime scene?”

“What about the stuff I found, anything worth mentioning?”

“OK sweetie, I’m out of here.”

And indeed it is, over by Jack. It reads thusly:

Booze (and a hell of a lot of it), Roofies, and…what we saw in that video up there. We’re basically done here, but let’s go pester Claire some more.

“Like you said, it’s great hand writing. Which Egyptologist do I call to decipher this?”

“Yes, actually it is. Okay, I’ll leave you alone.”
