Part 26: Intermission 6. An amazing idea

Intermission 6
An amazing idea.

When somebody would ask you to port this game to another system and maybe re-imagine it, what would your answer be?

Well if you wouldn't say "Turn based cell phone game" then you have no place in the amazing world of game development.
Yeah I shit you not. Somebody thought it would be a good idea to turn this into a turn based strategy game for cell phones or other mobiles.

I found this purely by accident and surely not because it's popular. With that said though, it's not a bad game. I like turn based tactic stuff and had some fun with it. It reminds me a lot of early nineties games and is surprisingly sophisticated, for a cell phone game.

In short, you have a squad of six guys with unique classes and fight other dudes on various maps, sometimes even with a tactical challenge. I've played like twenty missions and it seems like there are many more left. The missions do get tough but it mainly boils down to getting in a good position and luring enemies into bad positions. That is because terrain is very important in this game. It adds a defense bonus to your guys and you need that to survive. Otherwise you will take too much damage from counterattacks. You also have to watch your ammo as it is limited and needs to be re-supplied during combat. Your guys can obviously die but will be back in the next mission. There are downsides to dying but I'll cover that in the vid.

I should point out that it has nothing to do with the original game. It's about some kind of war in the game universe and even though we see familiar faces, they don't have their old skills. Keno, for instance is a club swinging ruffian instead of a suave sniper..

The classes

Heavy weapons
Decent ranged damage and medium movement. Your main shooty guy and nothing special past that. Can move and fire.

Light weapons
Low ranged damage and higher movement. A scout class without any scouting. Can also move and fire.

Sniper
Very high range and damage but bad movement. Your main damage dealer, but it's tricky to get him into good positions and he has low ammo. Can only move or fire.

Dogfighter
Good melee damage and movement. Your only melee class and tank like unit. Best used to take hits or club dudes. Can move and club.

Medic
No attack and only support skills. Can heal and supply with ammo. He has good movement and is pretty much the most important unit. Can move and use one of his skills.

Pioneer
The worst unit. He can not fight and has medium movement. His gimmick is that he can lay and defuse mines. But he can only move or use his skill. This makes him pretty much useless aside from some map specific situations. I hate him very much. In theory a sapper is a cool thing, but the enemies will just be in range before he can effectively put down a mine for the most part. Fuck him.

I made you a video of the first two missions. A word of warning though, I didn't had the means to go for high production values. As I currently have a streak of awesome luck, the isolation on my headset/mic combo broke and I had to put my hand on the computer case to ground it. You can still hear a soft humming though, sorry! A new mic is not in the budget right now so I said: Fuck it, let's roll. Also I winged the commentary in one take, because holding your hand on the case for fifteen minutes while talking is dumb and I don't wanna do it again. So I hope you can see past the occasional blooper and shoddy production. Yeah I know, lame excuses right? I added awesome music though.

-> Lp'ing like it's 2007! <-

So, if you are interested I've uploaded the .jar file on my Mediafire. It's okay as this game is freely available on various mobile app pages, but I thought you might not want to click around on those. Just look for a java emulator and you are good. I used the KEmulator to play and record. But it is kinda iffy with custom key binds and I had to use the keypad window.

Real game update probably on the weekend.

Whelp!
