Wing Commander III & Standoff

by Ilanin

Part 135: Hyperion System, Vega Sector, Mission 2 (Gameplay)

Our girl Flint was the overwhelming choice as wingman, with 5 votes compared to 2 for Vaquero and 1 for Maniac, and the Excalibur (and, presumably, people who like shorter videos) edged out the Hellcat (and people who like me having to edit out several minutes of firing at capital ships from inside their hangar bays) by 5-3, with 1 vote for the Arrow. Conversations-wise, you went with the low-morale option for Flash and the high-morale one for Vagabond, proving that your dislike of Flash outweighs your love of careBlairing.

Kills this mission: 12 which is not very many, but then this mission doesn't have very many enemies in it - 18 fighters and three capships max, and I think I saw 14 of those fighters - and it does have quite a lot of friendlies - a wingman in an Excalibur, and three Confed capital ships. The only real challenge is keeping your wingman alive, for which you're actually somewhat better off not trying to kill enemies as fast as possible, since it prevents new ones from spawning and, since your wingman will go for the capships, they won't be looking for new enemies. To be sure, Flint follows orders, so I could have done the sensible thing and ordered her after the fighters each time, or the arguably even more sensible thing and sent her home, but the latter of those two felt like cheating a bit really. Still, the big problem is the cruiser at the end - you saw how much damage it can do to a fighter, and unlike me, my wingmen (no matter who they are) seem disinclined to dodge after the first time. So, yeah, had to retry this a few times to keep Flint alive. Still, meant I didn't have to make a special effort to present this:

: We are here to say goodbye to Lieutenant Robin Peters. She flew smart, but she flew with heart. Flint came from a long line of pilots, and her family should be very proud. She lived to fly, and I only wish she could know how much she'll be missed as she takes her last flight.
