“Yup, definitely another lance over here,” Hellhound confirmed. His Cerberus’s bulbous arms rose as he snapped off a couple of shots with his Gauss Rifles encouraging the new arrivals to keep their heads down and stay respectful. The enemy’s reply was immediate, the azure flash of a PPC passed meters over the Cerberus’s left shoulder. A flight of LRMs fell short, peppering the rusty soil with explosions.

Bergit Lowe kicked her Nightstar into gear. Hers was the slowest machine in the company. Unlike the rest of the lance, she had to balance the need to attack with their need to escape later without abandoning her machine. Major Marik’s life hung in the balance, true, but she wasn’t about to let the Capellans get their hands on her `Mech.

“Any idea what we’ve got, L—” she corrected herself midway through saying LT, “—hound?”

“I can only see one,” the Lieutenant said. “It’s new. Damn the Helm core, the Capellans are catching up faster than I’d like.”

“Who knows what else they’ve been up to,” Bad grumbled. “I keep hearing rumors about salvaged ‘Clan’ `Mechs on the market. Maybe they’re reverse engineering the things.”

“If they are, we are,” Bergit pointed out. “I wouldn’t worry about that. Just having a machine doesn’t give you enough technical expertise to build one. They’re probably just doing the same thing we are: taking existing frames or recovered blueprints, modifying them a bit, and putting on different armor arrangements to see what works best against Lostech weapons. That’s why the Cerberus’s armor is rounded: with luck it’ll deflect a Gauss Rifle round rather than letting one punch straight through.”
