Behind Enemy Lines: Tactical Update 16

Battered and broken, the ComGuard Grim Reaper pulsed one of its running lights in Bad’s direction. He came up short, half-way through stepping over the fallen form of the other. One blink, a long pause, then three. A short pause, then six. Moving almost automatically Bad toggled a secondary channel over to 1003.6.

“—ope you’re listening,” a voice crackled. “I’m probably not making it off the field, but Acolyte Kreszentia wasn’t in her `Mech when the Capellans attacked. They’re going to blame you for this, and dead man walking or not I’m too angry to let that happen. She should be around here, try to recover her. If that’s not enough to convince you, then I hope this might: if the Capellans don’t want ComStar to know about these `Mechs then they’re going to kill everyone. Not just ComStar, but League citizens as well. Find Alice, tell ComStar, and there’s sure to be an interdiction. And then maybe the League can start making the Confederation pay for—”

There was a sharp crack as the Grim Reaper’s transmission died, its head cracking open like an egg as the auto-ejection mechanism kicked in. A moment later the machine’s right breast ruptured as a fireball split it cleanly down the middle. The Grim Reaper’s C.A.S.E. might’ve been enough to protect the pilot but the force of the explosion drove it into the ground. Bad scanned for parachutes for a fraction of a second before twisting to sweep the ground. The Guardsman had spent his machine—and possibly his life—to try to save his fellow pilot. Bad wasn’t cold enough to ignore a sacrifice like that.
