Part 553: Auxilia - Turn 9

Auxilia: Tactical Update 9

Jason’s hud went black for a moment as the three tons of high-density solid-state explosives secreted inside one of the Republic’s Revenant BattleMechs went up with a blinding flash. It cleared just in time for Duncan to watch the mushroom cloud roll lazily upwards. The bulk of the blast was hidden from him behind the buildings, but even with their shielding the compression wave had rattled his `Mech and it would be more accurate to say he’d heard the rumbling noise of it with his bones rather than his ears. For a stunned half-second it seemed like the battlefield fell still as the Clanners struggled to comprehend what had just happened. They opened fire almost as one, at whichever machines their honor commanded. The Baroness howled and punched out, and Lam’ah Jud Malouf’s Anvil went dark on Jason’s monitors.

His crosshairs fell on a distant Copperhead as the machine twisted in a vain attempt to keep IRIS’s little Locust from outflanking it. The pulsing strobe of Jason’s Large Pulse Laser brushed the machine’s top edge and for a long moment Jason feared he’d missed his target. The Copperhead’s torso rotated back towards him, a flight of LRMs roaring from their tubes. The machine’s arms snapped straight ahead and its legs locked in that way: maintenance mode. It only happened when a BattleMech’s DI computer stopped receiving a signal from the neurohelmet entirely, as if the `Mech were waiting for a technical crew in the Mechbay. That wasn’t the look of a piloted `Mech, even the garbage input from an unconscious pilot would keep a machine moving a little.

“I’m keeping that,” Jason announced, his voice sharp, vengeful, and perhaps a touch more satisfied than he’d intended.

“I,” Alec replied, “think Central won’t argue with that, as long as Duncan can drag it along with us. Holy hell, Jason.”
