Part 560: Air Raid - Turn 1

Air Raid: Tactical Update 1

Noretti’s pulse quickened as her borrowed Phoenix Hawk’s log legs carried it the last hundred meters towards the tunnel’s exits. Water was already sloshing around her `Mech’s ankles, and her pace was slow, a mere fifty KPH to allow Captain Duncan’s ponderous Atlas to keep pace. She had the lead, which was only logical. The Phoenix Hawk was quick and had respectable electronics warfare capabilities. It was a good machine, well cared for, and finely honed even if some of its eccentricities were likely the result of its old pilot’s preferences.

“I thought these tunnels were supposed to be hurricane proof?” The freebirth woman piloting the Stag asked, probably rhetorically. The appearance of that machine among the Demon Hawks’ replacements had been one of the rudest surprises in Noretti’s life, a shock far worse than merely being taken as a bondsman. A relatively ancient design, the Stag was the natural evolution of the Vulcan, one of the SLDF’s workhorse `Mechs. It was a Clan design but it wasn’t just a Clan design. It was a machine that had originally been produced by the not-named Clan. How or where the so-called “New” Rim Worlds Republic had gotten their hands on the design Noretti didn’t know.

“If they wanted it to be, shouldn’t they have elevated the rails?” Another pilot asked. Noretti didn’t recognize the voice.

“No, see? It’s simple logic,” the scout pilot the others called inexplicably called Coots drawled. “The tunnel’s ferrocrete, the support beams for the tracks are ferrocrete, and the tracks themselves are ceramic. Tunnel fills up with water, water keeps the tracks from being blown away by the wind. Then when it’s all over they open up those little grates on the side and drain all the water into a city reservoir or something.”

“Which works just fine,” the woman Iris added, “until the reservoir fills up and the tunnel floods permanently.”

“Details, details,” Coots replied dismissively. “I’m sure the chances of that happening are lower than the chances of Kerensky returning to kill us all.”

“Can the chatter,” Jason interjected before Noretti could manage an angry retort. “We have no idea what we’ll be facing so when we make our entrance be ready for anything. Noretti, stick close to me. Marshal, you’re with Duncan. Everyone else, spread out and try to draw anything you can’t engage directly back towards the heavy hitters. Let’s do some damage.”
