Part 82: Summoning 201: Lightning and Ultimate
Summoning 201: Lightning and UltimateThe party is a few steps away from the earth crystal, the final step in their goal of reviving the world. Before getting to that, let's take a brief detour to find the final two summons in the game.
It's been a while, so here's the relevant section of Mephilia the Summoner's notes:
D's Journal: Mephilia's Memo posted:
<1>
Girtablulu
..........................
Hresvelgr
Temple held in wind and sand's embrace.
Ziusudra's Sin
Foot of the mountain sundered by the holy war.
<2>
Promethean Fire
Temple bathed in searing flame.
Deus Ex
Ancient tower of prayer, buried in viscera wrought by man.
Susano-o
A crescent moon upon the frozen sea.
We've gotten everything but Deus Ex and Susano-o.
Also note back when we got Ziusudra's Sin in Mount Fragmentium, the related hint didn't mean much. Now, thanks to DeRosso, we know all about this so-called holy war.

After reaching Everlast Tower, the party gained access to their last summon, lightning-elemental Deus Ex. We'll get this one first.

Note that this is not the ultimate summon, Susano-o, which we gained access to earlier, after defeating Barbarossa back in Chapter 3.

Safety first: equipping a lightning-proof sword will give Edea all the protection she needs to avoid being electrocuted.

As for the rest of the party... well, Edea will make sure they get revived afterwards.
Deus Ex, by the way, is short for Deus Ex Machina, a latin term meaning 'God from the machinery'. The term is used in storytelling to denote a situation where a twist changes everything at the last minute with no forewarning -- as though God itself swooped down to change things up. The result is usually disorienting and frustrating for viewers, since there's no appropriate buildup to explain how the result came about.

So, what hell-beast lies in store for us this time?

Ah, television. The true demon of the pre-internet modern age.

The televisions pull back to reveal...

Okay, so we were actually looking at the face of a giant steampunk spider. That makes more sense.

The gears on either side of it wind up, generating electricity.

Which is then directed to the front screens.

Wait a sec, isn't Edea wearing a suit of metal armor?

Hope that sword with the rubber handle does the trick!

Yeah, no big deal.

One down, one to go.

A reminder of how

Actually Ramuh is great, always a chill helpful guy.

Lastly, Susano-o. Mephilia, Suleiman, Barbarossa and countless others have had their lives ruined by the search for this elusive summon.

Anyway, he's right here.

Walking into the northwest corner of the northeastern isle leads the party straight to this guy.

As mentioned earlier, the party can't find him until they've defeated Barbarossa.

Not sure who sent these owlmen to hand out summons, but this fellow got the short straw for locations.
Susano-O is used in several pieces of Japanese media, and is originally referring to one of the most powerful Japanese Shinto gods. He is a god of sea and storms, brother of the gods of sun (Amaterasu) and moon (Tsukuyomi).

Come to think, how do you prepare for a summon with no element?
I don't think we want to fight yet.

First, raise everyone's magic defense. More HP helps too -- just to be sure, Agnes switches back to her good ol' first job, monk.
A short time later:

Some exercise is sure to help warm him up.

So far we've had a demon city scorpion, demon airplane bird, demon washing machine lady, demon train dragon, and demon television spider.

How will the ultimate summon match up?

We start off with a close up of a radio tower.

Which zooms out to be revealed as the weapon of... a giant demon?

In a forest of radio towers.

Whoops--

Looks like he noticed us.

In a motion almost too quick to be seen--

He strikes.

But the party's ready.

This time -- for once, only on the final summon of the game--

Everyone's survived.

We did what Mephilia, Suleiman, and Barbarossa failed to do. Now, perhaps somehow, they can find some measure of peace.

And that's it: We've now gotten every summon in Bravely Default.

Goodbye, birdmen.
Next: The party returns to Everlast Tower and saves the final crystal.
