Breath Of Fire: Dragon Quarter

Part 23: Centre - Yezuit

Update 23: Centre - Yezuit

Welcome back. Last time we broke into Centre, the seat of the Regents’ power. We defeated Cupid, the second Regent, and continued our journey deeper into the complex.

Music: Centre Ministry Sector

The first room we come to in Centre 4F North is infested with Buzz Militants.

Lightning magic is effective against them, even after they buff themselves with Shield.

They also leave behind permanent stat-up items, so it’s worth fighting them despite how annoying they can be.

There’s also another Pandora Box in the next corridor.

One thing I didn’t mention during the previous Pandora Box fight is that you can actually kill them before they self-destruct on turn 4, and that they will drop different items depending on when they die. If you kill them on the first turn, you’ll receive a Save Token.

If you kill them on the second turn you’ll get a Gold XP. Gold XPs are very rare and very useful items, with the only downside being that you need to have them in your inventory in order to receive the benefits.

If you kill the Pandora Box on the third turn you get a Soul Ring, a shield for Nina that blocks damage based on her current HP. Far less useful than the Gold XP.

In the next room we find four Darkstalkers.

One is much bigger than the others, but that doesn’t seem to make it stronger or tougher.

The smaller three are clumped together and immediately get their bodies frozen by Nina’s new Blizzard spell.

Killing them all causes the Treasure Key to spawn. The Chest is back in the hallway where we fought the Pandora Box.

This is the skill I really wanted to get. At 15 AP Snatch is a very expensive skill, but totally worth it since it lets you steal things while also cutting all damage by a quarter.

Taking the right corridor in the Darkstalker room leads to a pile of free MedKits. The door to the left leads to an empty room.

Going left leads us to another teleporter.

Music: Remaining Traces

The party enters a deserted chamber.

: Face to face!

Suddenly, a man appears in front of the pool table!

: I’m a Regent.

:…to see the sky. Give us your key.

: If there even really is a sky, right?

: Then sure, I’ll give you my key…

: You’ll have to show me…what you’re really made of.

: Can I really believe in you?

: The one who will claim back the sky…

:…just how strong you really are!

The scene ends, and we are immediately plunged into battle against Yezuit. He might seem like the most jovial and laid back Regent we’ve met thus far, but trust me when I say that we’re in for one hell of a battle.

Music: A Moment’s Joy

The first thing you need to know is that Yezuit is fast. Really fast. His speed is maximised, so he will always go first in any given turn.

Yezuit will always open the battle with Shadowwalk, a skill that renders him invisible and impervious to damage.

Seriously, you can’t even target him while he’s using it. The effect will remain active for three turns, giving him plenty of time to shred your characters with impunity.

There’s only one way to actually damage Yezuit while he’s invisible, and it involves Nina’s traps.

If Yezuit steps on a trap he’ll take damage and become visible again. This is slightly trickier than usual since Yezuit seems to be the only enemy in the game who will actually run around traps if he can manage it.

Yezuit doesn’t have many powerful attacks, but he has enough AP to attack thrice per turn. Backflip is his basic physical attack - nothing fancy, but powerful enough to be threatening if he decides to spam it.

It’s also dangerous if he uses it after halving your party’s HP with Primus.

All his other attacks are basically just annoyances. Yezuit isn’t a physical powerhouse like Deamoned was.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t take him seriously. Yezuit has the least Absolute Defence of all the Regents - a mere 50 or so - but he makes up for it with truly ridiculous physical defence.

Level 3 skills barely scratch him, and he’ll even laugh off a +60% combo-boosted ‘Shatter!’. Like Cupid, Yezuit’s strategy is to slowly grind you down, only instead of relying on an invincible minion he simply tanks everything you throw at him between bouts of invisibility. With all that in mind, how do you actually beat the guy?

Traps. Unlike other Regents, Yezuit’s Absolute Defence is low enough that it doesn’t render Nina’s spells and trap runes useless. Three overlapping Mirage Blasts will deal a hefty chunk of damage, and even Fireballs / Fragballs will do more than Ryu and Lin’s combos. This is one fight where Nina is better off saving AP for her own use.

Eventually Yezuit falls to the party’s assault.

Even in death, Yezuit is the chillest Regent.

This time we get 16,800 experience due to the Gold XP.

If you can’t be bothered with all that, there’s always D-Dive.

The old ‘D-Charge x3 and Twister’ still applies here. Just make sure Yezuit is in his visible form before doing it.

Yezuit drops his key behind the pool table.

This teleporter will take us out of Centre’s main locale, but we aren’t ready to continue just yet. Doing only one route through Centre means missing out on a ton of loot and two Regent battles, and this is a 100% completion LP. Join me next time as I use the SOL system to travel back in time to do them all.

I can’t find any concept art for Yezuit, so here’s some art of Nina instead. Like Bosch and Lin, her design changed significantly over the course of the game’s development.
