Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Hearts

by MaskedHuzzah

Part 7: Not Actually The Second Orb

(Magarugi) Huh huh huh... Your first Orb of Loto right? However, one is not useful at all. All four must be gathered to summon the power of Loto's Orbs. Go now, toward the next land. What will await you there...? Do your best, children! Huh huh huh... Wahahaha!

(Kiefer) Where is this? Did we actually travel? It looks like the same place.
Helpful Merchant: What do you mean, where are you? This is the Samaltoria Region, of course.

(Luin) Well, Kiefer! Should we set up the camp around here? Grandpa Gyavan and the others should be coming any second now.
Then let's get everyone together and set up camp for 'em.

Whew! I made it! Gyavan, you seem well!
(Gyavan) Ohh, so you came at last. I thought you would.
Is that so? I thought about it after I met those children. If I travel with you, I'll be able to encounter tons of monsters. There are many types of monster hearts to get. No doubt about it. Rather than wait around in Liliza, I thought I'd be more useful here.
This guy knows a lot about monsters. You can ask him anything. How about it, Kiefer? Is it okay if he comes along?
What the hell, why not? I'm Kiefer, and this is my caravan.
Oh! Did you say you were Kiefer? You're a nice boy, and so understanding.
Right. Well, I'll take care of this guy here.
(Monster Professor) Hmm... Are you trying to say that I can't fight by his side? But I wanted to ride on the wagon and check out the monsters... Well, so long as we work together, I guess! Right, right. You can call me the Monster Professor. It's been a long time since I've been called Professor, but I like it! By the way, have you been collecting monster hearts?
When possible.
Oh, is that so? If my research is correct... Those monster hearts are sure to come in handy! Just keep collecting them!
Say, our number of wagons has increased to two now, right? You should let some allies that have been sitting at camp ride on it!
Waaay ahead of you.
Well then, for starters we should go to places that people live. Then we should listen to what they have to say.
So... go to towns and talk to people?

Knowledgeable Caravaneer: There's a castle here where a hero who saved the world was born. I wonder if one of the Warrior's descendants is the king of that castle?
Red-Headed Girl: I took a nap a while ago and I had another dream. A big man with a serious face was wielding a sword... He wasn't really scary, but I was so surprised that I woke up.
Will an Illusion in Samaltoria give us one of the Orbs of Loto too? I wonder if we'll have to search for something else again... But I'm willing to do it! I have you to help me, Kiefer!
You have that backwards, but mostly correct, I suppose. Let's go! Wait, first let's check out the map.

This? This is the 'great map' you kept talking about.
(Randol) Of course not.
(Vandal) The other map is a bit better. But it takes three of us to make a reaaaaaly good map.
Second map?
Yeah - that one right over there.

Still not very useful, but better.

(Raid) Jewelbags are terrible annoyances, but are worth quite a chunk of change - about 3-4 times as much as most of the other monsters in this area.
Oh, hey, a castle!

Then let's bother people!

Distraught Bully: Anyone who looks at it can tell you... That's no kitty cat. He found it outside and gave it some food! It let out a terrifying roar! I'd never been so scared in my life!
(Leela) Silence. Sit. What business do you have with Leela, the Seer? If your searching for something, do you want me to foresee it for you?
Well, you've been doing well so far, so please.
Wait just a moment, why don't I go with you? You are searching for the Orbs of Loto, right? If I'm in your camp, I can foresee the location of the Orbs. Of course, I'll join you in battle too, by showing the remaining hit points of enemies. I'd be your own personal Seer. How about it? Sound good?
Hell yeah! That'll make things more convenient!
I was about to go on a journey alone. But I can't overlook how hard all of you are trying. I want to be of use to you. Well then, I'll head onto the wagon.
Troubled Young Man: Why do I have to get the fish just to feed that cat? I'm troubled that His Majesty hasn't put more thought into this. He knows how far away the western port is, but still he insists...
Scared Little Girl: I had a nightmare... A big man had this big sword! Whoosh! Whoosh! He swung it around and came closer and closer.

Knowledgable Guard: Right now, our country is searching for powerful people. We're searching for people who are capable of confronting the monsters that are causing trouble at the southwest Gate of Laura.
Bewildered Guard: I think Prince Ixas is alone in his room again. He's studying... Medals? Meteors? I'm not sure. I wish he would study etiquette instead, though. Sheesh.
What? Who are you? Oh. Travelers?
Of course.
Well, you came at the right time. Come to the inn. There are too many people here, but the inn will be fine. You'd better come. I won't forgive you if you forget.

Yes, leave it to us, mighty king of Samaltoria.
Our swordsmanship will cut down the monsters. You will see.
I'm going to do my best!
Oh, you seem reliable! I'll be waiting here!
Yes! Do not be afraid. We will head to the Gate of Laura immediately.
Sarcastic Guard: Our king has inherited the blood of the legendary Warrior, Loto. But he isn't really handling the confrontation with the monsters, is he?
Hmm... Are you here to confront the monsters? No. There's no way I would ask a child to do such a thing. The Warriors that were just here are already quite capable of doing this. After so long, the Gate of Laura will be safe to pass again. Your journey will become quite easy then, I assure you.
Well, let's go back to the inn.

We have several!
Well, I know this may seem sudden, but drink this. Don't worry, it's not poison. Just gulp it down. Come on. Drink it! Quickly!
Well... not poison, you say? I guess. Mmm, tastes like... well... Hey Luin! Does this smell like chloroform to you?
You drank it all? How is it? Are you getting sleepy yet?
Wait, what did you make us drink?
(Ixas) It's a sleeping potion that I made. I'm experimenting with medicine. Next, I just have to see if this stuff works on monsters too. The data up until now remains inconclusive. Alright, I'll do it this way! You'll add me to your caravan. I am Ixas, the Medic. I'm researching medicine. I'll be able to get a lot more data out there with you. I just need to talk about it with my dad. Then I'll be right with you.
Then back to the castle we go!

I've decided to go on a journey. Did you not hear me, Dad?
You... You think you can do whatever you want?
Of course I do. I'm the prince of the country, after all.
That's telling him!
But why a journey?
My responsibility as the leader of this country is many years away, is it not? Before that time comes, I should expand my knowledge of the world around us. I have already decided, and you cannot stop me. I'll be going now.
Let's roll, Ixas. What is it, Carol? Do you want to come along too?
Gyauu!
(Ixas) Hm. Well, that'd be fine. You could make yourself useful. This is a baby monster. It can hold it's own in battle. I'm taking it with us.
Gyaugyau!
What? I don't know what exactly is going on here, but... He's the type to do whatever he wants. In any case, take care of Ixas for me. Monsters are still patrolling the Gate of Laura. Please, don't go anywhere near it.
Of course not!
