Part Fourteen: Enterprising

I have a boat!

I also have a bunch of vikings to talk to, because they all have something new to say after I dealt with the Nepto Dragon!

Most of these guys aren't that exciting. Most NPCs in RPGs aren't that exciting. In my own personal playthroughs, I always start out a new game talking to everyone, but by halfway through or so, I tend to just breeze through areas silently.

This is useful information if you're new to the game. The sea is also an area where it can be useful to have an offensive caster, since most of the enemies have a weakness to capitalise on.

This is foreshadowing something that we won't get to for a long damn time. If you're familiar with Final Fantasy, though, you can probably figure it out.

This is also foreshadowing something, but we'll get to it much sooner and it will be much less useful.

And the boss's wife here is just really enthused about us getting rid of the sea monster.

At this point, I'm finished with my trip back to the Viking's Cove. This time, anyway. I'm still missing a pretty nice treasure you can get here (because I am a SUPER PRO) so I'll have to come back.

There's also a new conversation to be had with Desch. I did this back in the Nepto Temple, but that update was getting a bit long, so I decided to stick it here.

: Any chance I can be a Warrior of the Light like you?

Is "Warrior of the Light" supposed to be a particularly prestigious position? Is it something people talk about in whispers and rumours and revere whoever gets to be one? I mean, it doesn't seem like that great a gig to me.

This is a weird camera angle. Really bizarre framing.

: Hmm...I felt something...like my blood was boiling, but it's gone now. Must've been my imagination.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that the little character-building dialogues like this one were new for the DS version, so like most of the character dialogue that was just sort of put on top of the game, it feels a little out-of-place.

All of that turned out to be wrong! New lines were added for the player characters, though, and I'm sure wording was reworked, so there's that. I'm just not really big on this particular method of character development.

Desch has a second thing to tell us, now that we have a boat.

: Even though they're blind, rumor has it that they can see into the future!
: Truly? These Gulgans are diviners? I am not sure if such powers are a boon or a curse...

This one is just telling us about a place we can go with the Enterprise. Also, Golbez has a strange way of speaking. I know where they were going with it, but the fact that most other characters in the game don't speak like that, even the old ones, makes it stick out to me.

: Just what is it that keeps them up in the air? I'd like to ride in an airship again, that's for sure.
: I don't know about that... I don't have very fond memories of my last airship ride...

Desch can also tell us this. Cid told us the same thing, remember, and that was sort of our "interim objective" that brought us here. I guess. We were pretty much on rails, we weren't going many other places.

As you can see, now that we have the Enterprise, we get a larger world map. We're still limited in practice, though. I'll explain what I'm talking about when it comes up.

In other news, I'm done with being small now, so I can switch these guys back to their "real" jobs.

Finally, I take to the sea!

And here's the Enterprise-taking-to-the-sea music!

A quick trip later and I'm outside this town.

The town of Tokkul, if you were wondering. I'm sure you were.

The town of Tokkul, where everybody just books it right the fuck out of there when we approach them. What's going on here?

Nice little house. Anyone around?

Haha, whoa lady. I'm not here to murder your kid, I just want to know what the news is.

Who am I not one of?

Ah. This sounds like it's going to be a problem for me, since Argus is the guy who makes airships, and this is a bad thing and I'm a hero or whatever.

Gulgans again. They were mentioned in the title screen text, too, if you'd forgotten.

Another place we can go.

Maybe we should hit up this Village of the Ancients sometime. Maybe we could finally learn about what we're really supposed to be saving the world from or something.

And, uh, this guy's off his meds.

Oh look, a Great Bow.

And some wine to really get those kids wrecked.

This guy's got some treasure for us.

I can't use this with my current party; it's a Monk thing.

This'll be handy for when I want to wail on sea monsters, though.

Well, we've heard a little about them, but I wouldn't really consider the kids "read in" on the whole thing.

Yeah, sounds like a raid.

Yes indeed, this is a problem. We're not quite ready to deal with it, but you know, it'll come up. It will be dealt with at some time in the future.

Joke's on you, lady I can't see. We just did talk to him.

A moogle! I'm out of things to say about moogles, but I just like pointing out that they're in places.

What the hell is this thing supposed to be?

What are you? Looks fuckin' gross, whatever it is.

There are new enemies in the desert, of course.

New enemies that Sephy fails to steal from just like a big loser.

I kill them. The other one was a Lizardman, by the by.

There are also other new enemies in other areas, and they can pack a real punch. As you can see, they've put Sephy down at this point.

And they get pretty close to taking Kuja out, too, and she's my best-armoured character right now. My options for dealing with this kind of thing are pretty limited: I can grind some levels to keep up with enemy advancement, or I can go fuck myself.

The heavily-but-not-completely random turn order screwed me here, as Jecht was actually queued up to dump this Cure on a low-HP Sephy, but ended up going last in the round or something. I'd bet that this isn't the last time something like this is going to happen, and I'm fairly certain that it'll come up at least once in a boss fight and really screw with my plans.

Anyway, I manage to get Kuja back on her feet and take out the last enemy to close out this update. Now I have to go deal with Sephy's dead ass, and there's some sidequesting to do!

Mail from Takka again! This one is really short and not at all heavy on the content. Just there to pad out the system, really. Do you know how good it looks in the pitch meeting to say that your added content "takes at least 20 hours to complete"? Because I don't, but I bet it's pretty good.
