Freelancers are one of three classes in the game that I consider "jacks of all trades". They're also the only class you have to start the game, which is pretty much the only place they should be used. Freelancers can use any non-class-specific armour in the game, which is nice, but they can only use basic weapons, which is less nice, and since they're not specialists, they trade a real unique command for using first-level spells, which don't hold up very well, nor do Freelancers have the MP pool that specialised mages have.

There's not really a lot to say about Freelancers, other than "dump 'em as soon as you get a chance". Not only are their magic abilities pathetic, but their stats are shit; the Freelancer is balanced in all stats, as opposed to excelling in one or another, but that means that at level 99, the Freelancer gets a 52 in all stats. Unlike Final Fantasy V, there's no reason to go back to the default class once you've gotten anything else. Freelancers exist only to take you through the introductory portion of the game, and can be safely filed away and forgotten after that.
