Part 128: The Epic of Gilgaluf - Chapter 1
Well, here we go again. Guess I'm still on my Final Fantasy 5 kick (which is probably because I didn't burn out by bashing my metaphorical head against the Sealed Temple). The Epic of Gilgaluf - Chapter 1
Time to get started.
So who're we playing as this time? (As if you didn't already know.)
A Blue Mage, huh?
And Omni, at that. In order to differentiate this guy from Rock, though, he will primarily be a supporting character, both in and out of battle.
Tutorial goblins are still a thing for new games. An incredibly easy thing.
If you can't see where this is going yet, I don't know what to say.
Hello, other character I'm planning on using this run.
Plugging an inexcusable hole in the characters used in runs, Galuf will be the star of the show.
Or should I say, Gilgaluf.
Rule 1: Gilgaluf's only companion is Enkidu; he shuns all other contact. (This will be a two-man run, using Enkidu and Galuf.) Yes, I know this sounds like I'm only half-assing the challenge again, but wait until you see the other rules!
Rule 2: Gilgaluf fears nothing, and never shows his back to the enemy. (This will be a no-retreat run as well.) Doesn't sound too hard yet, right? I mean, I've done this before, though this is my first "limited party" run. And yes, that is a Broadsword Galuf's swinging, despite the fact that Dragoons can't normally equip them. I'll explain later.
Since I already talked about the item pickups in Mozart's run, I think I'll just skip talking about the treasure in this one unless there's something particularly noteworthy (like a new weapon or something).
Even in-game, Gilgaluf's an antisocial bastard.
Faris joins, then promptly falls over dead because she's not part of this run (and no, I won't even pretend she's male this time- it was hard enough for my Entertainer run! This time, though, I'll probably just pretend she doesn't even exist). And yes, Lenna changed Jobs since the last menu screenshot- I forgot which one had Find Pits and Light Step, so I had to temporarily de-dead her to fix that. My sole excuse is that it's been WAY too long since I've played this game.
Don't you guys wish this idiot would just go AWAY?
Since I'm Omni this time around I actually have a use for magic shops now. I also buy some armor for Enkidu and some weapons. Yes, plural. Again, I'll explain later.
Incidentally, Rule 3: Gilgaluf cannot bear to discard a rarity. (If a piece of equipment can never be bought, I will never sell or Throw it.) Still not sounding too hard, right? I mean, I'm sure we've all done this one at some point, if not "collect everything just to have a full inventory." Wait'll you see Rule 4, though- THAT'S the one that makes the challenge.
As you might expect, Blue Magic is going to make this run a LOT less Potion-intensive; this is Enkidu healing from the aftermath of Learning (read: getting hit by) Aero using Vampire.
: Om nom nom...
Vs. Wing Raptor.
: You shall face the wrath of my...
: ...stick...?
:
Rule 4: Gilgaluf has mastered all weapons, for not even he knows which he will draw at any given moment. (I will be hacking Galuf's equipment selection to enable everything, and choose his weapon for each boss with a randomizer. Each weapon type only counts once- no rigging it with multiple copies of what I want. If I die, I will reroll. However, I'm free to use whatever weapon I want until I reach a boss.) Incidentally, this is pretty much EXACTLY how I was wanting to introduce this rule. Sometimes the randomizers favor you, I guess. Anyway, this rule isn't too bad right now, since I've just started, but by the end of World 1 it, combined with Rule 3, will be the bane of this run, I'm sure.
Yes, I know, Gilgamesh doesn't use Vampire. I know it, and I only know one other healing spell (which I don't even have equipped at the moment), so you'll have to come meet me IN PERSON to stop me for a while, I think. Besides, Enkidu (the enemy) uses it, so you can just say Gil learned it from him.

: Sup Rock.
: Sup.
You know, I'm pretty sure I have more trouble getting these from the Black Goblins in the Wind Shrine than I do farming Elixirs in the Ship Graveyard... but then again, that may simply be a matter of a smaller sample size since I don't deliberately farm shoes.
Unlike with Mozart, these guys are absolutely no threat to me this run, since they exclusively target Lenna and Faris (to the point that, if both are dead, they'll just sit there).
Vs. Karlabos. (For the record, the second Attack command for Galuf was so I could get the screenshot; from here on, I will try to remember to screenshot Galuf using whatever weapon he's using on the boss on his first turn.)
: What, again?

Weapons Used On Boss: Staff (that randomizer likes it, I guess)

Well, now I've got another weapon to add to the randomizer. Incidentally, I have decided that a corollary of Rule 3 is that I will not sell ANY equipment until I can buy it; however, if I could previously buy something but can't currently access the shop for whatever reason, I'll still count it as buyable.
Galuf's picked up an attack multiplier here. When I first arrived, he couldn't one-shot Skeletons like this.
And my insane Elixir drop luck continues, with the very first encounter here capable of dropping the things giving me one.
Galuf? Blankets exist for a reason.
Gilgaluf doesn't know how to read a map.
Vs. Siren.
: HA! Finally, a proper weapon!

In the interest of avoiding the overly-long posts that Mozart's updates invariably consisted of, I will be leaving off here. Oh, yeah, I forgot to screenshot it, but these guys stopped off in Carwen to loot the place and stock up, too; I got two Long Swords, a set of Bronze gear, a Copper Cuirass for Enkidu, and status restorers (10 each).
Current weapon list: Knife, Dagger, Rod, Frost Rod, Staff, Long Sword, Flail
Next time: North Mountain! What will Gilgaluf end up using next?
