Welcome to the UNSC Information database, I'm Athena, the AI tasked at organizing and managing this database.
My task is to provide you with necessary and relevant information regarding UNSC and Covenant history, equipment and tactics. We'll begin with the history regarding one of the major powers in the conflict that was known as the Human-Covenant War.
The history of the UNSC:
The organization that is known today as the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) has its roots in the Interplanetary war between the UN, the Jovian Frieden movement and the Koslovics that lasted from 2160 to 2164.
The end of the conflict also saw the founding and rise of the United Earth Government (UEG) by the end of the 2160s.
Earth was however straining from serious overpopulation and overmilitarization caused by the numerous conflicts during that period of time.
The solution came with the invention of the Shaw-Fujikawa Slipspace Drive. And in 2310, massive colony ships had been deployed to colonize the nearest habitable planets, thus giving birth to the "Inner Colonies".
By 2490, thanks to the rapid colonization, over eight hundred worlds had been colonized by humans in the Orion arm of the Milky Way. At the same time the "Inner Colonies" became stronghold in both politics and economics, but where dependant on supplies from the "Outer Colonies".
It was during this period that the planet Reach (located in the Epsilon Eridani system), became the UNSC's primary naval yard and training academy. Reach was a major producer of warships and colony vessels, as well as a training ground for covert operatives and Special Forces.
The continuous expansion however caused friction within the Outer Colonies, and sparked several major rebellions among the Colonies and also a series of brushfire wars sprang up during the same period of time. With the conflict having no end in sight by 2517 and prediction saying uncontrollable rebellion is only 20 years away the UNSC activated the Spartan-II program to combat the rebellion without causing severe civilian casualties.
However, by the year 2525 it was apparent that the largest threat to mankind came from elsewhere.
The Human-Covenant War:
"Your destruction is the will of the gods... and we are their instrument"
-Covenant transmission.
It was with these words that mankind suddenly realized that they weren't alone in the universe. And that they didn't come with friendly intentions.
The conflict began on the UNSC colony world of Harvest where humanity made its first contact with the Covenant. The colony was attacked without provocation and destroyed. Killing millions in the process.
The planet was retaken in 2531 by UNSC forces. It was however nothing more than a symbolic victory since the planet had been rendered inhabitable by plasma bombardments, a Covenant tactic otherwise known as glassing.
In response, the ever advancing Covenant forces the UNSC to enact Emergency Priority Order 098831A-1, otherwise known as the Cole Protocol to deny the Covenant access to all information about the location of Earth. Essentially, it forbids retreating vessels to set a straight course for Earth, as the Covenant is capable of tracking the ships through Slipspace. In addition, the protocol states that in order to prevent capture, any vessel that is under threat to do so much self-destruct after wiping all data information of Earth and its location from its databases. Failure to enact upon the order is classified as treason and punishable by execution or lifetime imprisonment.
The years that followed saw UNSC frontlines continuously getting pushed back. By 2535 all Outer Colonies had been glassed by the Covenant and in 2536 they started to attack the Inner Colonies.
For several years the war falls into a pattern: humans win isolated battles, typically during ground operations, but at a horrible cost. In space combat, the humans are losing at a precipitous rate, and one by one, the colonies fall.
UNSC's greatest defeat however happened in August of 2552 when a fleet of 314 Covenant ships attack and destroy the colony of Reach after finding out it's location from a retreating UNSC ship after the battle of Sigma Octanus IV. The destruction of Reach left the path to the Sol system open to the Covenant offensive.
It was during the end of the First Battle for Reach that a lone UNSC ship, called the Pillar of Autumn retreats from the system, on a secret mission, while at the same time being pursued by several Covenant ships.
