Part 30: The Delilas Family
Update 30: The Delilas FamilyWell, here goes nothing.

Music: Boss Battle
First up is Che Delilas vs. Gala. I understand that this fight is probably the hardest of the three, and it's the one that always screwed me over as a kid (and as an adult, for that matter).

I opened by chugging a Wonder Elixir to boost Gala's stats. I don't know how effective these are but I have enough of them that I'm willing to spend one now.

Meanwhile, Che uses that giant fuck-off hammer to distressing effect. He hits three times per attack string, and the hits do roughly 100-300 damage a pop. The overhead swing is the really dangerous one. I'd say he averages roughly 500 damage per standard attack.

Now then, Gala is currently equipped with an accessory that decreases MP expenditure and another that allows him to regenerate 20 MP per turn. Between the two, he is basically self-sufficient. I can sit here and spam Orb all day (or Spoon every other turn) and never run out of MP.

I hate you so much, Che Delilas.
Here's the deal; Che (and his siblings) have a very simple pattern. Standard attack, standard attack, super attack, repeat forever. Because of this they are very predictable. The thing is, they do so much damage that you spend one out of three turns actually attacking, and THAT's if you're lucky. You need to Spirit before Che's super, and you need to use one of your remaining turns to heal.
Because of this, these fights are long, obnoxious, and just fucking awful.

The good news is, Gala is virtually unkillable the way I have him set up. The bad news is this fight is going to take ages.[/i]

It took way too long (about twenty minutes) but I beat the asshole.
I am happy.

Bitch, I would love to see you try.

Lu was by far the easiest of the lot. Her attacks are the weakest, but she has the longest strings of hits. Noa did a surprisingly good job of blocking a lot of them (something like two per seven hit string) so all in all Lu was lucky to break 300 damage with an attack.
Meanwhile, Noa has an accessory that boosts her attack power, an accessory that boosts the damage her Arts do, and an accessory that halves the AP her Arts consume, cementing her status as the team's bulldozer.

Yep.

Her special doesn't seem to be quite as bad as her brother's, but then again Noa doesn't have as much HP as Gala so it kinda evens out. Still dangerous enough that you have to Spirit before it, anyway.

I actually used healing items instead of magic here since Noa's magic isn't so hot (plus I never grabbed Spoon for her like I meant to) and I have enough items to spare.

Needless to say, that fight is amazingly cathartic after the nightmare that Che's was. (five minutes)

Music: Big Boss Battle
Yeah, Gi gets a music upgrade. He's pretty damn dangerous too, although I'm still inclined to say Che was the worst of the lot.

Gi operates on the same pattern as the others, and his damage output is somewhere between them. Vahn has the most HP (thanks to Mei's Pendant which I'm keeping perma-equipped on him because I like Mei okay) so he can go the longest without needing a heal. Unfortunately, he lacks Gala's MP regen or Noa's stupid good damage output, meaning I probably have to be more careful with him than the others overall.
By the way, Vahn leveled up in the dungeon (in the previous battle, even) and learned something neat.

It's, um, less impressive than Noa's Ark, but still pretty neat. Plus I think Vahn gets a damage debuff against Gi (because this section isn't hard enough already) so it should normally be better.

I wound up using another Wonder Elixir here just because. It was probably a waste but I was nervous and it made me less nervous.

I mostly used Orb for heals, but occasionally busted out items. I think Vahn went through as many or more than Noa did in the long run.

I have achieved something that has eluded my grasp for my whole life. Today I am a hero.
(battle time: roughly fifteen minutes.)

All of the Delilases fall into the central cavern upon defeat, leaving me rather concerned about their status as dead.

Music: Fight the Mist Generator Guardians

...what?

Save point save point save point

Music: Koru Boss Fight
Koru has a special boss theme, which works because Koru is a special boss. The bar up top shows the number of turns we have before Koru self-destructs (which is a game over) and shows it's percent HP.

It has attacks, but they're all trivial. As long as you're fully healed going in, you shouldn't have to stop to heal here. Which is good, because you need to be on an all out offensive.
I really like the idea behind this fight. It's completely counter to the rest of the game instead of hoarding and rationing, you just blow everything you've got as soon as you can and hope it's enough.

Noa kicks things off well with over three thousand damage...

...and Gala follows up with a less impressive but still appreciated attack that ought to bring Koru down to like half health or something.

Or...you know...not.

The fight with Koru is really, really tight. You have juuuust enough time to do enough damage to kill it, and if you screw something up or don't play your Arts right or hold back for any reason then you're fucked.

I brought out all my best stuff, but...

...between an accidental heal and Vahn's poor AP entering the fight, I just can't keep up.
So I did something I didn't want to do, but it's probably the safest way to handle this fight and I might as well show it off now.

Remember this thing? It gathers points as you buy things, at a rate of 5% the item price. You can then use the Point Card in battle to spend the points, dealing damage equal to the points you have accumulated.

And with that, this horrible nightmarish section is over for real.

Music: Reviving a Genesis Tree
This probably sounds overly sentimental, but hearing this song after the events of this update brought a smile to my face. The game is congratulating me on finally triumphing over it's greatest challenge yet.

Ahhhh...
