Ultima 9

Part 23: Chapter 4, Part 8

The undersea passage is wholly unremarkable.

Eventually we get to this thing.

Let's just assume the random meaningless word written on a random, unlabelled scroll we found in a random chest in some random building is the password to this particular talking , because that's exactly what the developers intended for us to do.

The rest of the tunnel is uneventful. Some spike traps, gold, more spike traps, and then it ends.

And that's how you get to New Magincia. When Bjorn said this place was boring he wasn't kidding.

There's nothing here. Off to the right is a Shepherd's Crook, which we take to replace our gnarled staff. It's longer so it makes a better ladder.

I like posting screenshots of New Magincia.

First we take the path up the cliff.

Then across the fallen tower.

At the top of this tower is a scroll of Summon Reagents, which completes our set of the first circle spells.

: As you can see, I am now the caretaker of what is left of New Magincia. Is there anything that I may do to help?
: Can you tell me about the whirlpools?
: The waters here were once calm and beautiful, long ago. But since the columns destroyed New Magincia, these whirlpools have made travel by water very dangerous.
: Even I, more humble than anyone I know, cannot make the shrine of Humility reveal itself, and I have been unable to navigate the whirlpools to find it.
: Where can I find the glyph?
: You should be able to find the glyph in the column which rose out of the dungeon of Hythloth.

: The entrance to Hythloth used to be right next to the shrine, but it has been sealed, and the shrine itself has been buried beneath the water.
: If you can find the shrine and meditate there, perhaps you will learn the way to get to Hythloth.
: Can you tell me the mantra to the Shrine of Humility?
: Indeed, my friend. The Mantra is 'Lum'. If you intone this mantra at the corrupted shrine, you may be given some clue as to how to find Hythloth and the glyph.
: Where has the Shrine of Humility gone?
: As you have surely noticed, the land has changed a great deal since the arrival of the columns. Sadly, the shrine has been affected as well, and lies hidden.
: If a truly humble person stands on the promontory to the north, the shrine will be revealed to them.
: Do you know there whereabouts of New Magincia's sigil?
: Yes. I have the Crook of Humility.
: May I take it to aid me in my quest?
: I will be happy to give you the sigil, but I must ask you a favor. Without others here to help, my herd has been threatened by vultures and wolves.
: Will you help me protect them?
: Yes, I will help you.
: Thank you so very much, Avatar. I have lost many goats to these foul beasts.
: I have heard that if you can find and kill the alpha wolf, the rest of the pack will disperse.
: Now, as for the vultures, I'm not sure how to get rid of them. I do know that they don't like fire.
: If you would, please, eliminate both the vulture nest and the alpha wolf, I will gladly give you what you seek.

OBJECTIVE ONE: Do something to the vultures that is a catchphrase.

Here is the vulture nest.

Here is the Ignite spell.

Objective complete.

OBJECTIVE TWO: Use lightning this time.

The Alpha Wolf is hiding inside that dome.

Objective complete.

: Yeah, join my goddamn party.
: ...
: Hey guess what? I'm questing for the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom again. Remember that? Yeah?
; ...
: I hate you.

We get to the promontory by jumping across these rocks.

Standing on the slab makes the Shrine rise out of the sea, which means that faking humility is just as good as the real thing.

: Avatar, humbly do I request thine aid. I am corrupt.
: Please, find and bring to me the sigil and mantra of Humility, and the glyph of pride.
: If thou canst do this, then shall I again be pure.

: Oh look, the shrine is making a whirlpool for me. I wonder where it wants me to go?

: Maybe it's Orlando. I like DisneyWorld.

: I like the food at EPCOT.

: I hope they have candy.

: ...Oh... God damn it.
