Part 18: Meownsterpawdia: Meet the Deviants part 1
"Will it Cat?" Official Meownsterpawdia: Meet the Deviants part 1All right. These next two Meownsterpawdia entries will focus on an odd class of monsters unique to Generations and Generations Ultimate: the Deviants! We didn't cover Deviants a whole lot in the LP because they're... a bit weird and special? And also they're kind of a pain in the ass. Plus they're all tuned for multiplayer and this was mostly a single-player focused LP.
Here's the skinny on Deviants. To hunt them, you need Special Permits. You can earn these from the Courier for doing quests, buy them with Points from Neko (means "cat"), or buy them with Horns Coins at the Hunter's Pub. The quests themselves unlock by clearing certain quests in the hub. In Generations Ultimate, you unlock the G-Rank fights for any of the original Deviants by fighting their regular version in G-Rank. So, to unlock G-Rank Dreadking Rathalos, just fight a G-Rank Rathalos.
Deviant quests come in several levels. For the Deviants that were in base Generations, there are 15 (actually 16) levels. Level 1-3 is low* rank, 4-10 is high rank, and G1-G5 is G-rank. Each level has its own set of cat equipment. The new GU exclusive Deviants only have the 5 (actually 6) G-rank levels. You have to clear each level before you unlock the next one. Oh and Deviant quests function like Urgent Quests: only the host gets credit for clearing it. That's always fun.
*Not necessarily Low Rank, just slightly easier.
Except that's not all. Once you beat the G5 version of a Deviant, and reach HR 100, you unlock the super duper special EX level of that Deviant. EX Deviants are meaner, hit harder, and they're always Gold Crown in size. If you manage to beat them, you unlock the ability to Fuse their armor. Oh, and also a lot of them have best in class cat weapons for their element or status, so HAVE FUN. Fortunately, if you're only after their cat gear, you don't necessarily have to fight the EX Deviant (unless you want to Fuse their armor, that is). Beating level G4 unlocks the ability to craft the EX cat gear. G3 and up have a chance of dropping the bit you need to craft "Perfect" (EX) scraps of that Deviant. This is listed under "EX Loot" for each Deviant.
Of course, the real hellgrind with Deviants happens when you're after their human equipment. Each Deviant fight drops tickets in the quest rewards. You always get two of that level, with a chance of getting more. Each level also has a chance to give you tickets for the levels below it. (So, a level 10 Deviant fight will guarantee you two lv 10 tickets, and has a chance to give you additional tickets for levels 1-10.) Tickets are needed to forge the armor and weapons of that Deviant. Each piece of armor, and each weapon, takes one ticket, in addition to the usual crafting mats. Except you also upgrade armor and weapons, yeah? Well each upgrade also takes one ticket. And you might actually want Deviant armor, because a lot of them have really good skills! I did mention before that the hellgrind is real!

Refer to the linked Kiranico page for quest loot.
For drops, I'm going to truncate things. Deviant monsters have several different loot tables, depending on which level you're fighting. "Low" Rank (levels 1-3) is one table; High and G-Rank both have three. So, that's 7 loot tables in total. To make matters worse, the online resources I use are incomplete for Deviants. For a complete and accurate list of loot, please refer to MHGU DB or Ping's Dex (Mirror). But the important part is you get the EX Deviant loot from level G3 and up. Remember that!
