It's not abandoned at all. It is instanced, so chances are you were just wandering around your own private territory.
Last I played this game the internet feature was taken down due to some reason or another. It was quite irritating since I wanted to experience that part of the game. Was it actually any fun or was the multiplayer really just a tacked on gimmick that got old after a few minutes?
