Part 32
EX. Ending
The votes are in, and we know the hearts of the goons... some seek vengeance, twice as many choose to harness the positive energies of the Philosopher's stone, and all agree I'm a complete jackass for leaving you guys hanging. It did get more responses than any other point in the thread, which either means we've finally built up a group of readers, or that nothing mobilizes like hate and tragedy. I should have more disappointments in my threads.
Let's finish this.
No, but I'll walk into that burning building!
The digipad activates, but for some reason it links directly to 1580, instead of a half hour ago when the fire was set.
Time to re-watch another scene!
Oh My God You Can See Her Knees.
Eike drops in.
The grinding we did earlier pays off here, when Eike casts Fire1 and drives off the nattering old biddies.
This conversation is a bit shorter without Eike asking about Dana.
I hadn't realized Helena was a Jewish mother.
I really miss the emote, but there just isn't any reason to use it anymore.
Time for a showdown with the Doctor!
Aaah, I guess before Helena died Dr. Wagner wasn't terribly concerned with the Homunculus.
Here, Eike remembers what happens when two versions of one person touch, and stays the hell away from the doctor.
Hell of a Deus Ex Machina for Dr. Wagner. He's working in the basement trying to unlock the secrets of life and some stranger from the future shows up and hands over the holy grail of Alchemy, no questions asked.
Fate defied!
In the PS2 version, as Eike staggers drunkenly down the street, he's slowly fading away. In the PC version, it's all just kind of confusing.
Er... Hooray?
Par-tay at casa de Wagner!
...where is the doctor when his wife is being cured? Didn't he want to be in the room, or did he just have the cure-all sent up?
Going...
Going...
Gone!
Well, that's it for Eike. I guess all that's left is the credits.
No, no, wait, one last sequence. I'll leave it free of inane comment.
Eike may have stopped existing, but Dr. Wagner lived a long, happy life, surrounded by family, a valued member of the community. THIS is a happy ending.
As long as I'm here, let's hit up a few questions that may be bothering you.
So, er, what happened to Homunculus?
Not much. He's probably still in that stone. Given that there arn't any alchemists after Dr. Wagner with the skills Dr. Wagner had, it's doubtful he was ever released.
Why is Eike in the ending, then?
Remember, everyone's descendants look just like them in this game. With no malign forces killing off the Wagners one by one, they went ahead and established a bloodline. Eike II and Hugo II are probably brothers.
You're doing the other EX ending now, right?
Wrong.
Who killed Miriam?
Dunno. It wasn't Homunculus. He probably just used his powers to find a mother and baby in a tight situation, and used the confusion to make off with the baby. He could use pretty much anyone to replace the Margarete baby... remember, he didn't bother getting the hair color to match, so he wasn't being picky about it.
So... in the EX ending, the game didn't happen?
Probably not, no.
Then Miriam got shot and Sybilla doesn't have a kitten!?
Who knows? The addition of an entire bloodline to the city probably changed a lot of things. Note the two dunderbrothers who killed Eike in ending C seem to be alright guys, instead of idiot drunks. As Eike's little ending thoughts said, we don't know what happened to all the characters of the game--if Miriam is saved, how long Helena lived, if Oleg's movies blew donkey chunks. But Eike has chosen to believe they led happy lives, and he'd know as well as anyone would. By the EX ending, he's a master of time and space!
Is one of the endings the 'real' ending?
There are only real endings if there's a sequel. There's no Shadow of Destiny II, so there's no real ending.
Hugo was apparently in one of the Suikodens, though, although that's all I know about that.
Do you still want to invite Homunculus over for dinner?
Aaaah, I dunno. Gimmie a week or so to cool down, then we'll talk.
No, seriously, are you going to do the other EX ending now?
Hell no.
Did someone upload the endings when you were partway through the Let's Play thread?
They sure did! I'm pretty sure these are clips of the PC version, so we don't get to see Homunculous teleporting away all cool or anyone fading away. A pity.
Ending E (Part 2) -- Margarete saves Dana. Dana feels no spark from Eike, thank god.
Ending D (Part 2) -- The big demonic reveal! Eike alone forever.
Ending C -- Eike destroys Hugo, gets hit by a car.
Ending B1 -- Mr. Eckart out of fucking nowhere! Eike gets drunk.
Ending B2 -- Helena kills Hugo, Eike gets drunk.
Ending A (Part 2) -- Homunculus kills Hugo, Eike kills Homunculus, Margarete gets a makeover.
EX. Ending -- Eike tells the timeline to suck it.
Do the other ending.
Goddammit! Seorin is doing it this very moment, alright? Go bother him.
What's next for you, Mystic Mongol?
I've got what's basically a "Let's Play World's Largest Dungeon" that's been lying neglected over in traditional games. I suppose my free time will be getting that caught up to the point where my tabletop crew actually is. Maybe I'll get a mod to move it here, this forum seems more appropriate for it. Beyond that, I've been looking at the Day (Way?) of the Samurai games with one eyebrow raised. They arn't great sweeping dramas, but they're short and have a lot of branching paths in them, and the second has a cute little mute girl you can adopt and take with you on your crazy samurai lifestyle, which is adorable.
What can someone do for you?
If anyone wants to do whatever has to be done to put it in the Let's Play Archive, well. You know. It'd be cool. Not that you have to, of course, but you know. If you were cool, you would.
So! Shadow of Destiny. I hope you enjoyed it! All forty of you. Have a nice week, and don't forget to rate the thread on your way out.
