Part 3
Update 3:
Last time, we saw Brian Blessed (now the fourteenth Raidou Kuzunoha) get his proper title, and get a... Talking feline companion. What adventures are there waiting for Raidou?
"Most people don't pay much attention to this beat up old shrine... But it's actually of great importance to the Kuzunoha clan. This is where we contact our client in the Capital."
Oooh, let's see who this "client" is.
This is the client, apparently.
"You are that Devil Summoner, I presume? I am the Herald who brings tidings from Yatagarasu."
Wikipedia posted:
The three-legged bird is a creature found in various mythologies of Asia, Asia Minor, and North Africa. It is often thought to inhabit and represent the sun.
The creature has been featured in myths from Egypt, where it appears on wall murals,[1]. It has also been found figured on ancient coins from Lycia and Pamphylia.[2]
In Chinese mythology, the Fenghuang tracing back to 7000 years ago is sometimes shown as being three-legged, sometimes known as "The Sun". [3][4] The three-legged crow can be first seen in the icongraphy of the Xi Wangmu (Queen Mother of the West) in Han-period religion.[5] In the Yong Tai Tomb dating to the Tang Dynasty Era, one can view a three-legged bird.[6]
In Japanese mythology, the creature is a raven called Yatagarasu (八咫烏, which is the bird of the sun goddess Amaterasu. Yatagarasu appears on the Japanese ancient document called Kojiki and this bird is believed as three-legged, although there is no description the Yatagarasu was three-legged bird. Three-legged Yatagarasu is used as the emblem of the Japan Football Association today.
In Korean mythology, it is known as Samjogo (hangul: 삼족오; hanja: 三足烏. During the period of the Koguryo Kingdom, the Samjogo was a highly regarded symbol of power, thought superior to both the dragon and the Korean phoenix.[1] The three-legged bird is one of several emblems under consideration to replace the phoenix in the Korean seal of state when it is revised in 2008. The Samjogo is considered a symbol of Goguryeo.
"I am the one who ordered the Kuzunoha clan to maintain peace in our Capital city."
"So, long story short, you want Raidou here to keep watch over the capital city."
"Yes, the city is currently unstable because so many people have gathered there. The boundary separating this world from the Dark Realm is weak. Demons will start to appear."
Oh boy. That sounds familiar.
"There will be serious ramifications if they should attack the residents of the city. In order to prevent that from happening, I am calling on you, Raidou Kuzunoha the 14th.
Demons live in the Dark Realm, which normal humans are forbidden to enter. You, however, are permitted, as a Devil Summoner. You must subdue the demons before they can cause any public harm. Such is the will of Yatagarasu."
Since Raidou is CLEARLY a BURNING PASSION action hero and not some dumbass kid with emotional problems and/or daddy issues, he takes it upon himself to DEFEAT EVIL and dispense justice to the evildoers.
Or something.
"I am glad to hear you say that. There is one last thing. You will have an assistant in the Capital...
A man named Narumi. He runs a detective agency--on his own, at the moment. You are to become employed at the Narumi Detective Agency and works as a detective."
"A detective agency, huh? That's a pretty swanky way to gather information, isn't it?"
" I have already made the proper arrangements with Mr. Narumi. The fate of the capital rests on your shoulders, Raidou Kuzunoha. You may also find this to be valuable... Please put it to good use during your mission."
Raidou gets a heavy load on his shoulders. THE ENTIRE CAPITAL. What will happen to our daring, hat wearing, cloaked Devil Summoner?
Well, this!
Exposition!
Isn't that Gouto's argument in SMT1?
Narumi Detective Agency. Cut the Gordian Knot.
And then the phone rings.
"That is what I said."
"Cute. But, we only take the... special cases, if you catch my meaning."
"Uh huh."
"Listen, kid, I am sure you are a nice little bird, but I am not in the mood for prank calls. Where are your parents?"
"[iWonder what that's about. She did say please. Nothing better to do...[/i]"
And so, Raidou's first case STARTS.
The Bridge.
In this bridge, Raidou and Narumi find far more than they expected.
I like the bowler hat.
"Y-yes, well..."
"*sigh* Listen sweetheart, we run a legitimate business, and we don't have time for games. If you are having any trouble at home, why don't youjust go and talk to your teacher about it?"
"Sir, please! It... It isn't like that...
I want you to... Kill me."
GASP
"Otherwise I--"
"Hold on a second... Kill you? What are you talking about?"
And then they all get interrupted rather rudely.
By a GRENADE.
ROBOTS?
In the 20's or 30's?
What the hell?
THEY TOOK THE GIRL.
Raidou clearly cannot allow that. It would be against his code of conduct.
They can kill you. In one or two hits. I was lucky, not a single hit this time. But no matter what, they cannot be defeated. Not this early, anyway.
They are gone. But they shall be seen again.
And that is how the first episode, or case begins. The hell.
"What do you make of all that business last night? I've heard a lot of weird rumors about that bridge. You know what they say, right? About people dissapearing and then showing up outta nowhere? Think that could be what we witnessed back there? Still, a girl asking us to kill her? That's slightly disturbing. Not to mention those red soldier guys. Hey Raidou, think you can find out who that bird was? Maybe her name or something? It's bad business to have a client vanish under our nose. We should at least look into it."
"This case does seem a bit out of the ordinary. Narumi is right, let us investigate further, Brian."
"Being a detective is all about legwork. That is, YOUR legwork, as you ask around town for information. I'd go, but it is easier for you to do it anyway. You know, with those demons of yours."
Clearly, Narumi is in the know about Raidou. Notice how Gouto refers to Raidou by his original name. Also: Narumi is lazy. NEXT. Getting some demons, knowing people, getting INFORMATION.
