The requested data on the Kilo

Eyes Only Naval Intelligence
Kilo Class Submarine, Export Model

Intelligence believes any Kilo operating in the theater to be the latest 877 Export Model, Modified; Project 877EKM.

The Kilo is a diesel / electric attack submarine. She is armed with a maximum of 18 VA-111 torpedoes in 6 forward torpedo tubes. She is likely equipped with a quick loading device; From monitoring Russian naval games we know she can complete her first salvo in two minutes and follow up in five. She is dead quiet, with no active cooling required. While idling underwater or drifting with a current she makes no sound. This allows her to bypass passive sonar networks in the right conditions.

She was designed for anti-submarine warfare from the ground up, but she has two weaknesses.

First, We know she carries no towed array sonar. The russians house the array in a boom in the aft section, raised to clear the proppeller and the Kilo has none. She is deaf if you get behind her. We have a good confirmation of this.

Second, she will need to recharge her batteries snorkeling. She can do this at full surface speed at 17 meters but during this several hour window she is noisy. We estimate her underwater duration to be 800 km. They have been known to be at sea for over 35 days or 9000 km.

The best numbers available:

Estimated maximum depth: 400 m
Monitored maximum dive: 240 m
Maximum speed surfaced: 10 kts
Maximum speed submerged: 20 kts

Periscope depth: 19 m
Radar / ESM depth: 17 m
Snorkel depth: 17m at no more than 10 kts

If the export models have the same sonar suite as the Russian fleet boats she is equipped with the Shark Tooth active / passive sonar linked to a combat control system. Intelligence puts it on level with your BQQ-6 array but the fire control system should be slower than your BQS-13.

She has a single 6-bladed propeller. Be aware intelligence has requested updated sound profile recordings of the export models. We suspect at least two Kilo class submarines have been sold to Iran. The Kilo has been previously exported India, Poland and Algeria. Be on the lookout for any indication of modifications or improvements.

We know the Russians are attempting to develop a 533mm tube launched anti-ship missile for the Kilo, but we have not monitored a succesfull launch. We do not expect this capability in 877EKM.
