Part 7: Into The Fire

Last time on Tales of Eternia

We met up with a merchant named Ras, who knew about one of the greater craymels.

We encountered Sylph and convinced him to join our side

Ras left the group to pursue his moneymaking dreams, but Keele caught up with us! Looks like the academics sent him packing.

And now...

Part 1 (Chambard): [YOUTUBE] (~13 minutes)
Part 2 (Efreet Gorge): [YOUTUBE] (~19 minutes, plus three minutes efreetchat)

We make our way to the desert city of Chambard to stock up on supplies. Undine had peaceful rivers and Sylph had windy caves - with the fire craymel, I don't think we'll be so lucky.

Boss Time!

Efreet is quite a piece of work. Look at those pecs! HUAGH! YEAH! UMMF! HOOAH!

Efreet has loads more health than any enemy or boss you've encountered so far. Despite floating around, Efreet falls into the heaviest class of enemy - he can't be lifted off the ground at all. This makes Spread and close-range Air Thrusts extremely damaging, since instead of being knocked around out of the spell effect, he's forced to sit there and take it. Demon Twist is the best move Reid has against him since it hits four times - if you have Tempest Strike you might try that, but we don't. Farah has an extremely difficult time hitting him though, since her attacks can't affect his hitbox very well. Palm Strike and Twin Palm Strike will still hit him and knock him away if you need any breathing room.

Despite taking your spell effects like a punk, Efreet is still extremely dangerous. At best, he'll merely pound you with his fists. What he often prefers to do is rush forward through your attacks, scoop up one of your characters, then hold that character up in the air and explode you his hand over and over before tossing you away. It's very brutal and does a ton of damage. He also has a Heat Wave attack what makes a shockwave - it's not very threatening compared to the scoop.

Spell-wise, Efreet likes to cast Fear Flare and Eruption magic. On Hardcore mode he pretty much stops using Eruption, instead preferring to cast Explode. When you do enough damage to him on Hardcore, he will cast Explosion Nova, the closest thing to a Mystic Arte he's got. He casts it instantly and the battle stops and you take a shitload of damage. It can potentially end your fight right then and there just from ravaging your party so hard. Fortunately, he only uses it once.

Once you finish Efreet off, you get Summon Efreet which burns everybody for a fuckton of damage. Like, you thought Sylph was strong? Pff, that twerp has nothing on this.

How about his spells? What does he give you, and what happens when you fringe him?

Right out of the gate, you'll get Eruption. A whole bunch of flaming shockwaves will burst out of the ground, tossing enemies straight up. After three bursts, a bunch of fireballs will rain down. The latter portion is pretty weak, but the bursts are the meat of the spell anyway. The caster gets control back after the shockwaves and before the fireballs, so the fireballs are just a bonus.

5 7 Once Efreet is leveled up a little bit, you can fringe him with Undine to get Sharpness. It increases the attack power of one ally - useful if you have a CPU character, but kind of useless when playing multiplayer. Fun fact, most of the guides I checked on GameFAQs said Sylph instead, which is BULLSHIT. GET IT TOGETHER, IDIOTS.

6 5 A wind arte that increases ally accuracy - this is super useful against the next boss, but otherwise it's not really worth the trouble. Efreet, I know you're really buff, but you should really spend less time buffing and more time hurting things. Fire cleanses all!

Note: The numbers are the required craymel Levels. I didn't include them last time since it's level 1 for both.
