Part 82: The Blade Drifts of Zopheir

Watch the cutscene!

Brrr... B-b-brrr... It's c-cold... S-so...very...c-cold.
Okay, old man, we get it already.
The aged have lower body temperatures, ya know. Ahh, what I wouldn't give for the heat of that desert.
You're gonna slip and fall if you don't shut up...
Oops, too late.

...S-sorry.

There are swords coming up out of the ice.
Yeah, they seem to be all over. Just what kind of place is this?!
I thought Zopheir got its name from the sharp cold, but I guess I was wrong.
I don't think you were too far off with "cold as a void". *Shiver*

What...what's wrong with him?
Aaah!!

Wh-what was that?!
It's big... ...I-is that an Entelexeia?!
...No. I don't sense intelligence in it.
So it's a monster, right?! We'd be in trouble if that thing attacked us.
It shouldn't bother us if we leave it alone. Forget about it. Let's go.

Karol!
Huh, oh, right!

This dungeon is alright. I mean, it probably could be better, but after Heracles this is completely fine.

It's not hard to find your way around here, even though it might look a bit confusing at first glance.

Fairly early you'll run into that monster from the entrance again, which will smash the ice in front of you and cause some other ice to lower, so you can cross that instead.

This event trigger is unfortunately placed, so the enemy around it will kind of... hang around inside you if you haven't killed it before. Oh well.

You need to take a chill pill.
It looks like he's taken a liking to us.
I prefer dates who are a little less aggressive.

Of course, that means you'll get drawn into the battle right after that short cutscene.

On the plus side, here's Repede's Cyclone Shot:

Anyway.

After backtracking a short bit we can continue our way through the dungeon.

Of course, that same thing will happen a few times.

You sure are energetic, old man!
I-if we s-sit around t-talkin', we're gonna f-freeze our b-butts off! Ah, achoo!
How annoying...

Third (and last) time.

Yeah, I don't like it one bit.
If we stand on really thick ice I think that we don't need to worry about being attacked...
Let's get back to land as soon as we can.
And back ta someplace warm! Achoooo!!

Judith learns Rising Moonlight Havoc, a nice aerial combination attack.

Eventually, we reach a save point. Everyone knows what that means, right? But first, a small tally of what we found here so far:

Immunity: Reduces the chance of receiving status effects.
Stat Boost: Increases the effect of magical status boosts.

Special: Trigger a mystic arte with Over Limit Lv. 3 or above. Hold the attack button after an arcane arte or above.
Anti Element: Occasionally decreases damage from an elemental attack by half.
Elemental: Occasionally increases effect of a physical attack with elemental attributes.

Super Chain 4: Able to link base to altered artes.
Lucky Soul: Occasionally recover TP when knocked to the ground.
Resist 2: Increases magic defense by 10%. Increase due to equipment not affected.

Watch the cutscene! I recommend watching the first ~5:30 of this!

It's an aer krene!
Huh, there's one even out here.
It's not putting out any aer, though. Maybe it's what's left over when they dry up.
This area doesn't seem desolate enough for that, though.

We're up on this rock, right? We'll be fine.

Or not.

!!

Look out!

Yuri pushes Karol away.

...A monster that uses an aer krene to trap its prey?

N-no way! You guys'll all get eaten up!
This isn't something you can beat on your own!
But!!

Uuuh...!!

Uh, well, hope you've trained playing as Karol!

Okay, seriously, you thankfully only have to hold out a minute or so. I'm pretty sure it's possible to also win this by damage but I doubt you'll manage this on reasonable levels/equipment, and even then the battle would end early.

Still, it's perfectly possible to die and get a Game Over here, so don't take this lightly! Feel free to be fancy and use some Gels when you need them.

Always feels nice.

More on the boss, this guy is a fucking asshole. Not only does he fly, making it hard to attack him with Karol in particular, he can just simply dive into the ground from time to time.

For this, for example. Rather wide-range and stuns people that get hit by it. Very annoying.

Apart from that it has a couple standard attacks, an ice breath, and some Icicle magic which can be insta-cast when it dives.

Taking damage occasionally triggers those small cutscenes.

So yeah, just survive long enough, and...

I can't watch this! I told you to get out of here!
I-I'm fine...
You most certainly are not!
No, it's all right. You guys are all here with me.
Karol...don't...

So no matter how bad I'm beat up, I can't lose.
Move, damn it! If ya don't, the kid's gonna...

How did he...!

How the hell did he pull that off? Hey, is he alive?

Sorry we're late, traffic was awful. You doing all right?
Y-yeah. Of course!
All right, let's pay this guy back double for all those knocks you took!

Motion Change: Changes standby and moving motion. You know how Karol normally drags his weapon behind him? This causes him to actually hold it properly.

Note: The boss fight in the video is a mess and took way too long, mostly because I set the difficulty to Hard for some reason. I recommend watching this one instead.

Listen to the full conversation!

Sorry we left you alone.
We're with you this time!
We're gonna do this together this time!
With all of us here, heh, this is nothing.
Your attack worked, Karol!
Thanks! I'll finish it this time!
Do it! Let's finish him off!
You're being too easy on the kid.
All for the guild, and the guild for all!
Grr, woof! Woof woof!
We are Brave Vesperia!

Exact same boss as before, except now with a full party.

That said, this guy is still a fucking asshole.

Really, this guy is annoying. Due to the fact he's below ground half the time you can't always hit him, he's huge and not easy to hitstun, and his attacks are all around powerful and/or hard to avoid.

Thankfully, the secret mission isn't that bad.

Just hit him when his... horn or whatever is out like this.

It's quite likely you'll accidently get this.

Apart from that, not much else to say. Just keep attacking and heal up as appropriate.

At some point I figure, hey, I found Judith's "Special" weapon in this dungeon, might as well show it off. Sorry Karol for stealing some of your spotlight!

Watch the Mystic Arte!

And that's about it for this guy.

Drops a Paralysis Charm, and the Secret Mission reward is some Body Paint. (which is somehow more durable than all the armor we have at the moment, go figure)

Achievement/Trophy:

Secret Mission 15 (360) / Secret Mission 16 (PS3)

Karol!

Come on! Keep it together, kid!
...He's all right. Once he calmed down it all went out of him. He's just passed out.
This kid... What if you'd checked out before we even rescued Estelle?
Cut him a little slack, now. Facin' down challenges like that is part of becomin' a man. Not to mention he saved our butts.
Yeah. We would've been lunch without Karol.
Woof!
Let's get out of here quickly. Karol's weak. This can't be good for him.
Right.

That was very impressive.
