The Fall: Last Days of Gaia

by Tin Tim

Part 13: There will be blood

There will be blood

Last time we discovered that paradise is a lie and that Satan does jack shit for his disciples. Religion, am I right?

This time we will take on an old quest and get some looting and murder done.

Remember when we assaulted the Ratskull Hq? A very sad guy told us about his brothers and how they quarrel over access to an old military bunker.

Let's take a look at that.

When we enter the map, we are greeted by a waving fella.

:"Hey, you there! This ain't exactly a good neighborhood for a walk in the park. Watcha doin' here?"
Meet Dick the Digger. He's not as crazy as you might think. Just a little.

:"Someone told me there are problems here. Is this Vulture Gulch?"

:"Vulture Gulch, yes. But you're going to have big problems if you try to set foot into the gulch. Two Seeker gangs have settled down there."

:"That's why I'm here."

:"Do you know why the gangs are at war with each other?"

:"I don't care, as long as you don't drag me into it."

:"I will take care of the Seekers. The GNO will no longer just stand back and watch the activities of such lawless gangs."

:"Government? Pshaw! Believe old Dick when he says that governments have never really taken care of the real problems! Well, it'd be nice if you can settle things. Good luck, you will need it!"
With such kind words he fucks off. You can chat him up again and he'll tell you about how he is looking for gold in the area. No success so far, but one of these days he'll find them nuggets!

The map itself is pretty clear. The two camps are in the middle and the base is at the top. On the lower right is a small town but we'll deal with that later. You might think it would be a good idea to just charge through the gulch, take some hits and go into the base. The problem with that is that the base has automated turrets which will rip you to shreds. I tried, there is no way to survive all that damage.

So, let's find out what those Seekers know that we don't. It doesn't matter which camp you choose as the outcome will be the same.

I choose the one that's closer.

:"Hey, what do you want? If you're spying for my lousy brother then you've got something coming to you!"

:"You mean Howard? No, he didn't send me. But I did talk to Clive. I'm supposed to see if you're still bickering."

In the German text they are called "faggots" instead of sissies.

:"I can't get my head around all the different clan names. Can you explain them to me?"

:"...conspired against you?"

:"What actually happened to your Daddy?"

:"But it didn't work out?"

:"What?"

:"Nothing! That's when he told us about the trick he had discovered. And a few nights later he wanted to show it off the other guys. Guess what happened then?"

:"The same thing?"

:"Have any of you tried to get into the base again?"

:"I could help you, maybe I can convince Howard."

:"Convince Howard? Hah, just who do you think you are? The only thing that will convince him is a bullet to the head."

:"If that's the right solution then I don't have a problem with it..."
*Puts on sunglasses*

:"Hah hah, a tough guy eh? I like it! Listen: if you succeed in 'convincing' Howard we can get into the base and split everything fifty-fifty. Of course I'll also explain Daddy's trick to you. Deal?"

Yeah, that sounds like a suitable deal.

But before I do that, let me just put down those C4 charges around here.

Why? Oh no reason, really. They are quite heavy and I just want to empty my pockets before going into the base, you know?

I move over to the other Seeker camp.

For some reason they already await our attack.

Not that it helped them in any way..

With news of my rousing success I run back over to Benson.

:"Greetings from your brother. He has an appointment in Hell - and his lousy clan as well."

That's quite a nifty thing to know. But what is that guy doing in the bushes there?

:"Hmmm, and then why did Daddy get shot?"

:"Oh, he should have read his watch right, the fool. It wasn't 3:30, it was 6:15. Whatever with the amount he drank that night, he'd likely have gone west regardless."

:"Fine, then we will plunder the base together now, just like we agreed to."

I see what you are doing there!

:"For someone who is so lousy at fractions, you are really cheeky. I won't be taken for a ride by the likes of you. If you don't abide by our deal I'll snuff you all out."

:"Let's see who's faster. Come on!"

So, it shouldn't surprise you that his mooks started to casually encircle us during the cutscene. As the player you catch on immediately, but it's kind of dumb to watch your guys stand around and just let it happen.

Whatever. Guess who's the idiot now?!

This worked quite well. Good thing I still remembered where the enemies will be, roughly.

But one of them bugged out and just stood behind a tree.

I really should have used the grenade launcher instead of taking all those bullets.

After all that, I loot the camps and fix up my crew. I don't find too much good stuff though. Some ammo and an Xm-8 assault rifle. The rifle has pretty much the same stats as Seagull's G36 so I probably won't use it.
Also Keno, Seagull and Ivana found levels on the ground. The later two maxed heavy and settled with "Critical hit" as the last skill.

So it's time to get into the base. As Benson told us, I rest till 3:00Am and then move across the dead zone.

There's several pillboxes on each side of the base, also mines on the left.

A little secret is that you can investigate the right most, and broken, bunker.

A Plasmablaster! It's essentially a Gatling that shoots plasma. But hold on to your butts, as it will be quite some time till I use that thing.

On the left side of the base we can see a downed Huey.

I would have liked to show it better, but there's mines. Guess how I found that out without there being warning signs?

Let's move into the base already!

There's no loot. Nothing in the whole base.

But when you get close to the middle of the area, cutscene happens.

We get teleported underground.

The base is very straightforward, so let's look around.

First the crew quarters.

That's no help.

But in the shower I find a corpse with something interesting.

Seems like we have to find the parts to make a key for the command center.

In the middle area, Seagull alerts us to three strange ashtrays.

I also find a small chest with the next part.

The last area of the bunker is the storage.

After looking around, I find a box with some low grade armor.

Yeah, this is shit!

But, when you are smart you press the key to highlight items on the ground.

The slightly bigger object is supposed to be a pack of smokes. You're supposed to gather that this is the place where that guy got caught smoking and probably dropped the key part when getting spooked.

The pieces combine into this.

Let's use it on all three ashtrays.

Computers!

Sadly you can't look at all these papers. But you can see parts of some American crest/symbol underneath.

Time for our loot!

Well you are partially right, Seagull. The armor and special ammo is nice, but the guns are trash at this point. When you go here earlier this will give you a neat edge but the fights are probably too hard for you.

Because I can't switch off the turrets from here I have to rest for the right time again.

Let's get out of here!

Wanna know something funny? I looked around for something to show off and the turrets sprung back to live. Sure enough, Agnes was just in range to get obliterated while the rest of the crew watched.

The last thing on this map is in the small town I mentioned at the beginning.

It is totally abandoned, save for one Npc.

Not giving a fuck about your sleep schedule.

:"Hey, I'm Jodie. Are you one of.. No, you're not. Too bad."

:"What?"

:"Oh, I was just thinking... It's not so important."

:"Were you expecting someone?"

:"Yes, actually... But you wouldn't understand that."

Now, you got to be a wee bit careful here. If you are dickish or ridicule her, you will get locked out of the quest. You'll understand soon enough.

:"Believe me, I understand a whole lot. I bet I totally understand your problem."
Like, totally.

:"Are you maybe a scientist?"

:"(eloquence) Yes, definitely. I am a scientist."

:"(success) Really? That's absolutely fabulous! I mean, it could be fabulous.. As long as you share my opinions."

:"Just tell me what's up, okay?"

:"Well, all right. Have you ever asked yourself if we're alone in the universe? When you look at the night sky did you ever think that there could be other life forms out there?"
The truth is out there, Scully.

:"Yeah I have. In a way."

:"That's what I expected! I knew right away that you're open-minded and devoted to science. What do you say to us working together?"

:"In what, lady? You still haven't told me what you're really doing here."

:"Isn't it obvious? I'm doing research on extraterrestrial life. On aliens, if you so will. I've already been doing that many years."

:"For many years? Have you ever met an alien?"

:"Yes, I have! I flew through a type of energy tunnel and suddenly found myself at a kind of beach. The alien was big, handsome, dark-haired and explained the secrets of life to me."
Yeah, riiight...

Strangely, the translation leaves out one of her sentences here.

"And no, I've never spent a week on drugs in Cuba. I'm sick of that question."
Make of that what you will.

:"That sounds interesting. How can I help you with your work?"

What a coincidence! I killed those guys.

:"Awesome! I can finally resume my work. And you? Do you want to go on a voyage of discovery with me at the radio telescope and maybe find a way to the stars?"
Don't be so desperate, geez!

:"I.. well.. I still have a few down-to-earth things to take care of, you know? But I will gladly come by sometime and see how you're getting along with your research. Until then."
Maybe we will visit her again, just maybe.

If you really care, you can go back to Clive and tell him about the fate of his brothers. He is sad, but did see it coming and decides to advance his career as an alcoholic.
