Part 66: Chapter 7, Part 4

Dungeon Covetous: Complete solution (Part 1)

Welcome to the Blackrock Mines of Covetous, where nothing ever works right. Ever! For instance, magical spells can't be cast inside the mines, but the mines won't dispel this light spell. Oh yeah, and healing potions don't work.

Near the entrance to the mines is a book. Apparently it was long-winded or something? Good thing we have the Ultima 9 developers to summarize their own lore for us and simply state "We would have written more but you get the idea."

The only way to recover health is to sip from these pools of mine runoff, just like in real life.

Inside the first main room are these smaller chunks of Blackrock. We collect exactly three of them for later.

Okay. Now for the quest. The first tunnel we take is this tunnel to the east.

As we start down the tracks, the stuck minecart inexplicably races forward, clips through us and crashes into the wall harmlessly. I'm not sure if this sequence is supposed to kill us. If so, it's never worked for me, so I usually ignore it.

At the end is this huge skeleton.

: Who are you?
: I am Lothar, the Sword Wraith.
: If you wish to test your mettle, you may step forth and challenge me, but know that many men have done so and yet none have passed.
: You are the Sword Wraith?
: Yes, I was once a man dedicated solely to the art of sword craft, until I was rendered undead by a liche. Now, I continue my sword play, though I am neither alive nor dead.
: I am on a most important quest. Please, let me pass.
: That is of no matter. I am charged with the duty of guarding this lift and so I shall. If you wish to gain access to the lift, you must challenge me.
: Otherwise, abandon this place now.
: I will challenge you!
: Challenge me at your own peril. There has been but one man born who has the skill and strength to defeat me: the Avatar.
: Only the Hero of Britannia could hope to best the Sword Wraith, and then only wielding Gringolet, the Ghost Sword.
: I am the Avatar.
: You claim to be the Hero of Britannia? The only swordsman greater than the Sword Wraith? You must prove this boast: go out from this dungeon.
: Go to the southwestern reach of this isle and find Gringolet, the Ghost Sword. If you are the Avatar, you will be able to perform this task.
: Only the Avatar can wield Gringolet against me. If you are the man you claim to be, you will not shun this task.

Leave this dungeon? Fuck.

Fuck.

God damn it.

Son of a bitch.

Shit-eating cock gobbler.

Fuck.

: I see that you have Gringolet with you. So, you are indeed the Avatar. Before we fight, there is something you must know.
: Below is a liche named Khelereth. He is an ambitious creature, whom I once served, before he found a new favorite. Beware of this liche, Avatar.
: He seeks power and the destruction of all Britannia. He is on the side of the Guardian, though he doesn't know it, and his boon companion will aid him in his conquest.
: Who is his new companion?
: One you know well, or knew well. Your former companion, Julia, now twisted by the Guardian, has become a Wyrmguard. She serves the Guardian through Khelereth.
: She will seek your life, Avatar, but you have it within your power to turn her back to righteousness.
: I thank you for the warning, Wrath. You are a noble spirit.
: Do not mistake my help for kindness. Revenge against Khelereth is my motive, not kindness for you.
: I am, however, honorable in terms of combat. Your challenge still stands before me and I must answer.
: Though I wish release, I must fight you to the best of my ability. Guard yourself, Avatar.

The Sword Wraith sucks.

He dropped a KEY.

The KEY opens a BOX. Inside the BOX is a BUTTON.

Pushing the BUTTON opens some DOORS under the ELEVATOR.

Say goodbye to the top floor!

Pressing the second button makes a clanging noise. The elevator doesn't move.

Fuck. It's broken.
