Nope. Well, let's restore and try it with the well house instead.

Dirty Passage
Your lamp has run out of power. I'm taking the liberty of replacing the batteries.
It is now pitch dark in here!
>turn on lamp
You switch the brass lantern on.
Dirty Passage
You are in a dirty broken passage. To the east is a crawl. To the west is a large passage. Above you is a hole to another passage.
Some worn-out batteries have been discarded nearby.
>x batteries
They look like ordinary batteries.
>
The batteries are now no longer in our inventory, so we're down to six items. Also, we now know for sure that the lamp is electric (as if finding batteries didn't already dispel that doubt).
I'll assume for the moment that you guys don't want the burned-out batteries, but let me know if you think of a clever use for them.
Not only is the game kind enough to replace the batteries on its own, but it will drop hints about this, too. If you've been to the vending machine already, it will remind you that it exists when your lamp dims. If you already bought the batteries but don't have them on you, it will remind you to go pick them up.
We also have no coins left to get more batteries with. So bear that in mind, too.
