I don't know, but let's be prepared if he comes back.

Did he run off with our food?

Anyways, it looks like our choices are west (deeper into the room), north or south (passages) or down (stairs). Let's do this Descent-style and clear each room before moving onwards.

Taken.

It's just a little axe.

This is a steel axe. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is studded with iron and copper and encircled with bands of bronze. This object menaces with spikes of rhesus macaque leather. On the object is an image of some dwarves in human bone. The dwarves are cheering. This image relates to the founding of Etägkor in 1976 by The Lamps of Bronze.

You are carrying:
a dwarvish axe
a black rod with a rusty star on the end
a small bottle
some bottled water
a brass lantern (providing light)
some tasty food
a set of keys
a wicker cage (which is closed)
a little bird

Looks like the food is secure. My, we are full of things.

On East Bank of Fissure
You are on the east bank of a fissure slicing clear across the hall. The mist is quite thick here, and the fissure is too wide to jump.

>swing axe
There's nothing sensible to swing here.

Well.

Adventure: Behind the Parser

The original Crowther version of the dwarf encounter had a message which popped up that read as follows:

A LITTLE DWARF JUST WALKED AROUND A CORNER, SAW YOU, THREW A LITTLE AXE AT YOU WHICH MISSED, CURSED, AND RAN AWAY.

Woods fixed up the grammar a little bit to make it less ambiguous.

(Until the first UNIX port of the game, everything was in ALL-CAPS. Our port is descended from that port. It's impossible to play a non-port version of this game now, unless you happen to have a DEC PDP-11 in your basement or are willing to dick around with emulators.)
