The penultimate script post

quote:

Sequence 10 (Missions 10 A and 10 B)
INT. SOVIET HQ
Kukov, now in a general uniform, sits behind a desk, looking to the PLAYER’S POV.

He brushes off one of his elaborate epaulettes.

KUKOV
Advancement in the Soviet Army can be rapid. Continue to pile up the victories, and the future is yours.

He produces a small map for the PLAYER’S POV.

KUKOV (cont.)
This is a critical Allied supply depot. We believe that many secret weapons and hi-tech devices originate here. The base is heavily defended. So, you’ll have this.

He moves the map aside to reveal a photograph of an impressive, sleek and heavily armed fighter aircraft.

KUKOV (cont.)
Our latest advance in aircraft, the MIG 39...a MACH 3 flying arsenal. Watch your belly approaching this base since the valley leading into it has a heavy SAM-site defense ring. Knock them out and you’ll free our airspace.

(Mission 10A)
Sequence 10A 1 (If Mission 10A is won)

EXT. SKY
The MIG 39 dodges SAM missiles and blows up the launch sites.

Sequence 10A - 2 (If Mission 9A is lost)
EXT. SKY
The MIG 39 dodges SAM missiles until one finds its marked and sends the fighter down.

(Mission 10B)
INT. SOVIET HQ
Kukov, now in a general uniform, sits behind a desk, looking to the PLAYER’S POV.

He brushes off one of his elaborate epaulettes.

KUKOV
Advancement in the Soviet Army can be rapid...except for those who fail too many missions. This may be your last chance.

He produces a small map for the PLAYER’S POV. The map shows icons indicating a series of tank columns.

KUKOV (cont.)
Our attack force must make it safely through this Allied territory to strike behind Allied lines. Make sure nothing happens to them. They must arrive without significant losses or they will be useless to us. Do not fail us again.

(Mission 10B)
Sequence 10B - 1 (If Mission 10B is won)

BLACK
A white spiral zooms to fill the view. As it gets closer, the spinning newspaper’s front page clearly forms in Russian. The masthead reads PRAVDA. The paper stops spinning and the headline melts from Russian into English.

HEADLINE:
“Soviet Army Stalemates Allies in Berlin!”

Sequence 10B - 2 (If Mission 10B is lost)
BLACK
A white spiral zooms to fill the view. As it gets closer, the spinning newspaper’s front page clearly forms in English. The mast head reads, The New York Times.

HEADLINE:
“Allied Defense Force Levels Soviet Convoy, Regains Berlin!”

Sequence 11 (Mission 11)
INT. SOVIET HQ
Gloved hands hold the aforementioned newspaper up before the PLAYER’S POV.

Nadia and a nervous Gradenko sit across the conference table. Nadia looks through papers in her briefcase.

GRADENKO
General Kukov is late.

NADIA
We have matters to discuss before he arrives.

Nadia hands papers to Gradenko.

NADIA
Do you recognize these?

Gradenko examines the papers and blanches. Nadia shows the top sheet to the PLAYER’S POV. Gradenko’s name clearly sits on the dotted line of his death warrant.

NADIA
Please witness that this is Comrade Gradenko’s signature.

Nadia turns and smiles at Gradenko. She pulls out a Russian service pistol and shoots him twice.

As his body falls forward, Kukov rushes in, looks at Gradenko’s body lying across the conference table, and sits next to Nadia.

KUKOV
Dealing with traitors is my department.

NADIA
He endangered Comrade Stalin.

The blood puddle keeps expanding.

NADIA (to Kukov)
One of my spies reports that the Allies are planning a major attack against us from the Baltic and the Gulf of Finland. You can cut them off as they try to refuel outside Copenhagen.

Nadia turns straight to the PLAYER’S POV.

NADIA (cont.)
Stalin also has something... (beat) ...someone for you to deal with.

Nadia indicates the map as she speaks.

NADIA (cont.)
A spy...code name Ulyanov. The Allies have him at the Hollingsford Sub base...aboard an Allied convoy. Stalin wants you to neutralize him with the Nvgarchoi Sub battalion.

The PLAYER’S POV exits. Nadia speaks off-screen.

NADIA
Now, Comrade Kukov, tell me what you found out about this Allied secret weapon...The Chronosphere.

CUT TO:
(Mission 11, From the Depths)

CUT TO:
(Mission 11)
Sequence 11A - (If Mission is won)
EXT. OCEAN
A sub takes out the LST as it tries to land. Flaming bodies fly through the air.

Sequence 11B - (If Mission is lost)
Subject code-named Ulyanov runs from an LST to shore.

Behind him, Soviet subs sink in flames.

CUT TO:
Sequence 12 (Mission 12)
EXT. BATTLEFIELD - DUSK
The battlefield stands empty. The sky burns a bright red and orange.

The image turns black and white and loses resolution, becoming:

C/U - TV MONITOR
The special Chronosphere sound fills the air. Instantly, an Allied battalion stands on the field.

NADIA (VO)
Play it again.

The image rewinds and plays again.

STALIN (VO)
Incredible. (pause) Analysis?

INT. SOVIET HQ
Stalin, Nadia, Kukov, Kane and the PLAYER’S POV sit around the conference table. The battlefield video continues looping during this scene.

The map hanging over them boasts more red then ever.

KUKOV
The Allies are calling it Chronosphere Technology. According to my sources, it’s done with extremely high-energy signals. Some sort of stealth technology.

STALIN
I want it.

KUKOV
How, comrade?

STALIN
I’m surrounded by idiots. Steal it! Nadia, tell that Greek general of yours we want detailed plans.

Nadia nods a firm response.

STALIN
Another of Einstein’s tricks. If Gradenko never let him slip through our fingers, that weapon would be ours now.

Kane leans over and whispers something to Stalin. Stalin smiles and looks to the PLAYER’S POV.

STALIN
Come.

Stalin moves to a corner. We see Kukov and Nadia listening hard. Kane stares at the two of them, smiles, then leaves.

STALIN
An Allied base outside Bucharest is sending out very strong signals. I believe this is where the Chronosphere hides. There are three separate control centers we identified. Take control of all three. Don’t let them destroy it before we can steal it... (beat) General.

Stalin returns to the table.

(Mission 12, Vanishing Act)
Sequence 12A - (If Mission 12 is won)

EXT. RUBBLE
Two Soviet soldiers inch along, picking through rubble.

A figure in a white cloak and long gray hair lies face down on the stones. He moans and moves painfully.

Two pairs of boots approach, one on each side. One pair nudges the victim, who moans again. One of the men leans down and rolls the body over.

As the soldier brushes away the debris and dust, Einstein’s bloody face becomes recognizable.

Sequence 12B (If Mission is lost)
EXT. BASE
The control centers intact.

Allied guards bring three Russians out of a prison, hands above their heads. The guards load the prisoners into a truck and take them away.

Sequence 13 (Mission 13)
INT. LAB
Einstein’s unconscious, clean face lays motionless.

He lies prone on an operating table, a single white light shining down on his drugged body. Technicians work around him in the shadows.

The image turns black and white and loses resolution, becoming:

C/U - TV MONITOR
One TECHNICIAN inserts a tiny chip in his pocket watch. He announces up to the video camera:

TECHNICIAN
The transmitter is undetectable and has a range of 500 miles.

INT. SOVIET HQ
Nadia, Stalin and PLAYER’S POV view the monitor.

STALIN
Why are you so sure the Allies will try to rescue him?

NADIA
The plan will work perfectly. Stavros will leak the information about Einstein’s scheduled “execution” to the Allies. They will seize their prize.

STALIN (incredulous)
And we will be able to track him with his watch?

On the monitor, a soldier helps a surgeon take the groggy Einstein away.

Stalin clicks a switch and the monitor shifts to an external view.

CUT TO:
EXT. BRICK WALL
A post sticks in the ground -- bullet holes and old blood on the wall behind the poll.

Guards tie Einstein to the pole. They blindfold him.

CUT TO:
INT. SOVIET HQ

Stalin, Nadia and Kukov stare at the monitor. A commander barks the typical commands to his firing squad in Russian.

Ready...Aim...

CUT TO:
SOVIET HQ
Nadia and Kukov exchange a glance. Kukov looks toward the PLAYER’S POV.

The Chronosphere effect spreads throughout the execution yard. The monitor whites out completely. The room goes gray for a moment then back to normal. The monitor goes crazy.

Nadia waits for the monitor to come back on-line. When it does, the post stands empty, a rope hanging slack.

NADIA
Einstein is gone, Comrade.

Kukov checks a computer across the room.

KUKOV
Allied coordinates coming in now.

Stalin sits. Both Nadia and Kukov look at him. Stalin slams his fist on the desk. Both Nadia and Kukov jump. Stalin smiles.

STALIN
Once we have the Chronosphere, our Iron Curtain will stand invincible. Prepare the strike team.

KUKOV salutes, then turns to the PLAYER’S POV.

KUKOV
Follow the tracking signals to their base. Work your way past the British Fleet. Be careful. Allied Radar automatically sends a self-destruct code to the Chronosphere if it detects any intruders. (beat) We can then use their new toy to destroy all traces of the Allied base and command center.

(Mission 13, Tempus Gambit)
CUT TO:
Sequence 13A (If Mission is won)
EXT. BASE
Soviet soldiers line up Allied prisoners, then zap them with the Chronosphere device.

Sequence 13B (If Mission is lost)
EXT. BASE
The self-destruct code makes it to the Chronosphere. It sparks and self-destructs.

Notes: Gradenko still dies, but its much more violent in this version. More graphic cutscenes were cut, thankfully. We learn exactly how the Soviets were supposed to capture Einstein, and why he was in the laboratory (although there's still a mention of tracking him in the released game). Einstein's also found in a similar predicament to how the Allies "find" Stalin in the ending to their campaign. And what's this!? Stavros may have had a more interesting character?!

Next time: The actual end. Of the script.
