Part Twenty-Six: The Airship Enterprise

Behold, as the Enterprise takes to the skies!

Also to be beheld: Golbez's new equipment as a Geomancer, which I went to the Dwarven Hollows to pick up. His weapons were the main purchase, because Geomancers don't have a lot of options for armour.

The first place to go is Tokkul, to see how everybody's holding up.

I guess Sara is helping with the reconstruction, but I'm not sure how she heard about the destruction. I think it would be cool if this game were like Final Fantasy IX, where you could see airships tooling about between places. I also wish this game were like Final Fantasy IX, where it didn't suck.

A lot of people in town just remind us that we're awesome, there's not a lot of stuff going on here.

But this guy is still telling us to go to here.

So is this guy!

This guy tells us about a place that we 100% had to go to in order to progress the story. I would expect his dialogue to change at least.

We can also talk to this lady, who hid from us before.

This is her husband, not another kid, which was my original impression because of the perspective and art style. I also thought this lady had two kids.

This sums up the state of things nicely.

You're welcome, generic people of Tokkul.

Let's go for a real trip.

I've had enough of the floating continent.

We are out.

And straight into a deep purple fog.

Not pictured: the steering wheel, where I assume at least one kid was hanging out.

: Aaah! Wh-what is this cloud!? It's...it's draining my strength away...

I'm gonna guess "Darkness", kid.

I'd originally just transcribed this, but I think that Golbez looks kind of silly in his Geomancer getup.

And now for Cid.

: I hope they reached the surface all right... Warriors of the Light... You lads are our last hope!

There is at least one lass on that boat, Cid. Come on, she's just as good as the other kids.

And...back to the purple void.

Let's just be told this, I'm sure we didn't want to see it or anything.

Again, let's be told things.

Anyway, here we are, on the surface. I will admit, that's kind of a neat thing going on there, with the swirling mist. In the NES version, it was just normal water.

The place is indeed sprawling. And empty.

Really empty.

One may go so far as to describe it as a "boundless ocean" of weird mist, in fact, if one wanted to tie it into the title of the music here:

The first thing we can find is a little island with a wrecked ship next to it. I suppose this island was a mountain plateau or something before the world got covered with mist?

Second place is a temple in a forest, surrounded by mountains. Again, it makes sense that non-flooded places are high up.

This island is literally just full of mountains, there's absolutely zero point to it being here.

And here's the last thing to see in the whole world, a big spike.

But let's check out that temple.

It has wellsprings! There...might be random encounters in the mist? I don't think there are, but I also didn't go out of my way to check.

Also here: something else? A sapphire?

Oh, it's a crystal shard, and I can't get to it.

That's not very useful right now, so let's check out this busted ship.

Yeah, that's pretty busted.

It's also a really small area, you can't go to the other side of the deck.

You have to head below.

Then have to go all the way down.

This is a a nice weapon. It restores the HP of whoever uses it when they land an attack.

I put it on Kuja. With her high Defense and the sword doing some healing, she'll hold up pretty well in random encounters.

I still have, like, 18 of these things left over from Castle Hein.

Over here, an old man watches a girl sleep. I guess you do whatever you can when you're shipwrecked in a dead world.

The young lady doesn't seem to be doing well.

And the old guy is freakin' out.

: Hey, Gramps! Calm down--just what's going on?

Oh. Well, that doesn't sound too good. I guess we'll just be going, then.

Looks like that worked out well for her. Top shelf work, kid.

Aria, by the way, is the girl on the bed.

Her last name is Benett. Sara's is Altney, and Cid's is Haze.

She has a theme, which plays on the whole ship, but seems appropriate here:

Looks like Aria is on her way out.

: She's very weak... We have to help her. I wonder if we have anything in our bag that can fix her up.

Like what? You think that feeding her a Potion is going to bring this girl back from death's door?

Oh.

It's actually an Antidote you have to feed her, but who's counting?

: Wh-who are you? Where am I?

She looks pretty happy, for someone who was almost dead five minutes ago.

: The light... I see a powerful light within you. Could that be...?

Yeah, baby, we're the Warriors of Light. *flexes*

: I'm Sephy. The crystals guided us to this world.

You should actually probably still be in bed. You're probably going to get hurt.

: If that were only true! Time is still motionless outside of these walls.

Kuja betrays the fact that we're not really competent.

: Bring me to the Temple of Water! Maybe if we bring the crystal shard to the sealed crystal... *Cough* ...Please! You must bring me to the Temple of Water!

No, you should just tell us what to do. It wouldn't reflect well on us if we let you run yourself to death.

So, yeah, Aria's following us around now. First person since Desch, and look how well that ended for him.

She's always smiling, too. I think Aria might be a touch nuts.

Hey, the Gulgans noticed it, too! And I don't know why you would doubt it, anyway. I mean, unless you could do all the fancy job stuff before and you've just been being a jerk about that this whole time.

Anyway, let's do that stuff with the crystal and save a world for once!

...NEXT TIME, suckers!
