White Mages are healers, with access to all but the highest level of White Magic, and a fairly decent MP pool for the lower-level spells, though it is a bit lacking in high-level casting longevity. They're not very good at physically attacking, but the White Mage isn't completely without magical offensive options, as the wind-elemental Aero family is classed as White Magic in the game. On top of that, White Mages can also equip elemental staves and rods that give free access to bottom- and middle-tier fire/ice/lightning spells.

White Mages don't have spectacular Vitality, which can decrease their survivability, but that's offset by the fact that when you have a White Mage in your party, you have a healer, and your dedicated casters should be in the back row, anyway. Their low Agility might look like another strike against these guys, but it tends to put their turns after enemies' turns, which gives you a chance to heal whatever happened in the most recent round, as opposed to pissing a Curaga up the wall. White Mages are the first class in the game that I would definitely say have a place in every party, and should be maintained in that place until you get the second White Magic specialist.
