Part 145: Century 2

Because I'm impatient, today was a boring day, and this is far and away the most interesting post that Solo Oracle is capable of generating, it's time for..

Solo Oracle: Century II

With the Wind Shrine out of the picture, Karl Boss looms on the horizon as the next big threat. Unlike Wing Raptor, no amount of Rejuvenation can compensate for his speed and ability to quick KO with Tail Screw or lock Mimir out with Feeler spam, so punching is out. Even if physicals had a glimmer of a chance with an actual weapon, the only real option - the Flail - lies on the other side of the Canal.

So it's time to grind for the second piece of the Oracle puzzle - !Predict.

Fortunately, the Torna Canal makes for a decent grinding spot - no threat of random spells or dying while waiting for Condemn timers here!




Also, this is the place where I discovered that I was wrong - !Condemn isn't a fixed 20 tick countdown! In fact, it seems to speed up with your job level! I have never seen this documented anywhere, which should attest to just how many people have ever bothered to use Oracle.

Alright, let's talk about !Predict.



When you use it, you get the choice of three ranks. The higher the rank, the more the MP cost, but the faster the charge time. First Rank costs only 1 MP but charges in 5 ticks, Second Rank costs 3 and charges in 4, and Third Rank costs 7 and charges in 3. The charge difference is fairly insignificant unless you're pressed for time, but the MP cost makes a world of difference. Why?

Because it's how !Predict chooses which spell it casts.

Here's the master table for Predict from the GBA Algorithm guide.

When you make a prediction, it checks the last digit of your current MP against this list, selecting its spell accordingly. Only four of these don't hit party members. One - of course, Pestilence - hits party members exclusively.

So, alright - Mimir just has to set his MP right and use one of those non-suicidal Predictions against Karlabos.

As it turns out, merely having the proper spell lined up isn't enough. Oh no. That'd be too simple! Here's the other half of that master table.

As you can see, !Predict also checks the last digit of everyone's HP, and determines the multiplier to be used on them accordingly. In general, the lower the digit, the lower the damage. This complicates things a bit when you consider that every monster typically starts at a 0.

Or it would, if the Oracle wasn't so weak, and didn't use a weapon class notorious for its awful damage potential.

Yes, the lowly Staff has suddenly found itself a new and prominent role at the forefront of Mimir's strategy. One bonk, and all problems are solved..
