Part 34: Post 9 - Fluorine

Walter the Chemist - Post 9 - Fluorine

We're on a boat, in case you ever forgot.

Xezat is a man with a plan. It involves moving a box lid.

This plan is fucking awesome.

Even Galuf agrees.

We fucking blow our goddamned way into the tower and get ready to bring this shit down from the inside. But first... Reflect Ring farming.

Yeehaw. Clearly I'm not going to get this done any time soon this way, so it's going to be "kill a few, reset if it doesn't drop" so I can conserve turtle shells.

Or it could drop in under ten fights. Praise be to Gilgabot.

Apparently the barrier is powered by multiple antennae? Neat. We're blowing it to fucking hell, though.

It never is that easy, is it? Time for an asshole.

Enter Atomos.

code:
Atomos
HP: 19997
MP: 10000
Vulnerable to Sleep.

Condition:Status:Party Member1:Dead & Party Member1 Position=80{
     Change Target:Party Member1
     Wormhole
     }
Condition:Status:Party Member2:Dead & Party Member2 Position=40{
     Change Target:Party Member2
     Wormhole
     }
Condition:Status:Party Member3:Dead & Party Member3 Position=20{
     Change Target:Party Member3
     Wormhole
     }
Condition:Status:Party Member4:Dead & Party Member4 Position=10{
     Change Target:Party Member4
     Wormhole
     }
Condition:Status:Party Member:Dead{
     {Pull,Pull,Pull}
     Pull
     Pull
     {Pull,Pull,Slow2}
     Pull
     {Pull,Pull,Demi}
     Pull
     {Pull,Pull,Qrter}
     Pull
     {Pull,Pull,Old}
     Pull
     {Pull,Pull,Pull}
     Pull
     {Pull,Pull,Demi}
     Pull
     {Pull,Pull,Qrter}
     Pull
     }
No Interrupt{
    {Comet,Comet,Nothing}
    {Comet,Comet,Nothing}
}

So I had this genius plan with Atomos. Note how he has 10,000 MP - I figured that I could burn that down with a new mix:

Dark Matter + Ether creates Dark Ether. Results?

It burns away 3/4ths of the target's current MP. 7500 MP on the first one, 1875 on the second, and only two Lilith's Kisses to burn away the last 625 MP! Easy, right?

code:
SPELL: Dark Ether
DAMAGE: 12/16                 DAMAGE FORMULA: 53
MAGIC HIT%: 99

Son of a BITCH. Since Atomos is level 61 and Walter is level 36, I'm having to fight the magical hit formula here since that isn't A% (auto) hit.

Walter's Mathematics Corner

There's two kinds of spells - spells with A% Hit which always land, and non-A% spells like Dark Ether. The formula for this is as follows:

Chance to Hit = Base Hit% + Attacker's Level - Defender's Level

In this case, it would mean:

Chance to Hit = 99 + 36 - 61 = 74% chance to hit.

On top of that, Atomos has 20% Magical Evasion, meaning even if I hit the 3/4 odds to hit, there's a 20% chance Atomos just says "lol no" and evades the Dark Ether. Fuck!

Since this didn't go as planned, uh...

Shit. Atomos just ate my party. And now I get to face down...

FUCK! So yeah, Every turn, Atomos drops hella Comets. 2/3 odds on each of his two, non-interruptable actions to drop a damn comet on Walter's head.

For actually respectable damage! Fuck this shit, it's a damage race now!

Can Walter come out on top?

Of course he can, this is a goddamned Chemist LP. NO FAILURE. NO RETREAT!

FINAL LEVEL: 36
RECORDED MIXES: 14
DEATHS: 0

Damn right.

Turns out this was a suicide mission for Xezat. But we have a submarine now!

Like other jobs, Walter is off to Moore first. You're supposed to go to Ghido's Cave, but I have other business.

Gear! That Sage's Miter and Luminous Robe brings Walter's Magic Power up a full four points. You remember M, right? Well, the Four Job Fiesta IRC channel has a helpful bot, Carbybot, that computes this for people.

quote:

[21:57:07] <~Kyrosiris> .mcalc 36 22 magic
[21:57:08] <@CarbyBot> At level 36 with 22 Magic Power, your magic M is 7. To reach the next M, you need to reach level 47.
[21:57:11] <~Kyrosiris> .mcalc 36 26 magic
[21:57:12] <@CarbyBot> At level 36 with 26 Magic Power, your magic M is 7. To reach the next M, you need to reach level 40.

It doesn't make a big difference right now. At high levels, though? Let's say after ten of those Hero's Cocktails?

quote:

[21:59:03] <~Kyrosiris> .mcalc 136 22 magic
[21:59:03] <@CarbyBot> At level 136 with 22 Magic Power, your magic M is 15. To reach the next M, you need to reach level 140.
[21:59:06] <~Kyrosiris> .mcalc 136 26 magic
[21:59:07] <@CarbyBot> At level 136 with 26 Magic Power, your magic M is 17. To reach the next M, you need to reach level 138.

Nice. An additional 510 damage per Succubus Kiss (before magical defense). Now, off to Ghido's.

You can nap on the sub. This is rad.

This is a Metamorph. He's not rad. They drop Staves of Light which you can break to cast Holy, but ONLY if you kill them in this form. They like to change into other shit and be generally annoying.

Walter is an asshole that torments animals.

The animals talk back.

This fucking translation.

Ghido is the fucking man. More than Faris, more than Exdeath, Ghido is The Best. If you disagree (other than to say Gilgamesh), you're fucking wrong. Just wrong.

The Great Forest of Moore is a fucking hellhole with WAY TOO HIGH OF AN ENCOUNTER RATE FUCK YOU our next target. Exdeath was born there!

Exdeath used to be a tree. They dumped bad, evil spirits into that tree. Then, like a over-full trashcan, it got smelly, turned sentient, and tried to take over the planet.

...What, your trash doesn't try to take over the planet? Weird.

This branch will grant us access to the sentient Forest of Moore. Let's roll.

ADMIT ONE: busted-ass chemist

Moore's gimmick is that it's a thick forest, so you only get small vision around yourself. This is fucking annoying, especially with the god-awful encounter rate. I hate it so. There's lots of good treasure, though, and I get most of it. Especially the money.

Ah, venerated old Flail. You guys remember it, right? I beat Siren to hell with it, instead of being a smart person and throwing 1.8x Potions at her in her undead phase. I'm a goddamned idiot. With this, Walter can lay it to rest. And by lay it to rest, I mean sell it for some potions.

Smokey the Bear says: fuck evil warlocks that set their home on fire.

Fuck you, Dragondarch.

Eventually this moogle pops up to save you. You go down underground, hide until the flames die out, and then re-emerge.

Did you know you can leave Moore through here? And yes, the world map is altered to reflect the fucking pyroclasm that just occurred:

God damn. Well, let's go do what we were here to do, punch a boss:

code:
Name: Seal Guardian
HP: 7777
MP: 10000MP
Absorbs Fire. Immune to Holy, Poison, Lightning, Ice.
Vulnerable to Death, Blind, Slow.

AI SCRIPT:
Condition:HP < 3000{
     Change Target:Whole party
     Fire3
     }
{Fight,Fight,Specialty}

There are four of these, and from the top and going clockwise, they're Fire (panic mode: Firaga), Water (panic mode: Aqua Breath), Earth (panic mode: Earth Shaker), and Wind (panic mode: Aeroga). Each one has 7777 HP and at below 3000 HP, goes berserk and spams their panic mode ability. This may be the first example of a low-HP panic mode on a boss, and we'll see many more, trust me. That said, they have one crippling weakness.

I only have two Dark Matters due to my "strategy" for Atomos that turned into a clusterfuck, so I can only kill two with Death Potion. That said, a Chemist can nullify the panic mode of the Fire one with Resist Fire and the Earth one with Levisalve, so they are the ones that I'll kill normally.

Wait, did I say "normally"? I meant Chemist-ly. Time to crack open those dragon fangs.

Dragon Fang + Potion (or Hi-Potion) is Dragon Power. This bad boy raises the target's level by 20. Off just that, Walter is now level 56, instead of 36.

I throw on, oh... a few. Five, in all. Walter is now level one hundred and thirty six. And how much damage does a Succubus Kiss do in the hands of a level 136 Chemist?

FINAL LEVEL: 136 (technically)
RECORDED MIXES: 16
DEATHS: 0

We're done here!

Aww jeez, Exdeath!

This is uh... bad. (spoilers: not really, Walter kicks his shit in)

Deus ex crystal!

Suddenly salvation! But she's under attack by Exdeath!

Galuf is having NONE of this shit.

Yeah, I'm damn sure, you big blue asshole.

This is a scripted boss fight. Galuf cannot die (even though I have him fixed at 0 HP smile:, and needs to deal 7000 damage to progress. Damn glad he's a Samurai right now because do you know how long this'd take if he was doing 6 damage a punch?!

Galuf is, obviously, down.

And he knows it.

He's a dead mother fucker.

I don't even own those spells.

WHO SAID YOU COULD USE MY MIXING INGREDIENTS

Next time: Revenge on a giant blue mother fucker.
