Part 9: Another Mission

And the grand winner of the ending vote is Charlone ! Her ending will be done first, then Arieta's, and finally Riviera's, followed by the guys.

Part 8: Another Mission

(To the ruins!)

: Wait!
: Damned nuisances...
: You're not gettin' away on my watch, Mini-Max!

: Hmm...strange. It should have been right here...
: Captain! That's...
: I know...Arieta!
: What? You're still alive?
: The time has come to end that winning streak.
: Then I suppose your demise was just...delayed a bit. Kill them, and recover the artifacts!
Yung: Grahhhh!
Yung 2: Guuuahhh!
: We can't let him get away.
: I'm certain your hostess for the festivities shall be most accommodating.

: Hey! Wait! Uhh...He's more of a baby than the kids at the orphanage!
: What shall we do about...Arieta, is it? She's controlling the Yungs.
: We need to follow the minister's messenger, but...
: What are you all waiting for?! GO!

(For Mission Complete, you have to get all the treasures before defeating all the enemies. However, the enemies are also able to pick up the treasure. Therefore, it's easiest to let them pick up the treasure first, then defeat them, getting the item. Again, Hans, Charlone, and Riviera star in this battle, since all but the first two enemies are far away from you. It's another one of those battles where strategy rules over force.)

: Whoever she is, thanks to her, the messenger got away. What do we do now?
: We need to go to the kingdom capital at once. Hopefully we can make sense of it there.
: Excellent idea. With me as a witness, we should have no problem convincing the King. Riviera, you will come too, right?
: Of course.
: Kingdom capital, here we come!
: But Captain, are you...
: Don't worry about me. I shall be fine until we reach the capital.
: Even though all the medicine is gone, Captain?
: But...

: This exam is a test case. Next time it may not be. You need to take the exam...I don't want you to have any regrets.
: Oh, thank you so much, Captain.
: Too much time has passed since we started this journey. We need to press on to the Burnstein Capital more quickly!

Burnstein Commander: Excellent work. Their approach is exactly as you predicted, Minister.
: It appears so...
Burnstein Commander: However, there is no time for celebration. This affront proves that the enemy's strength is more than we initially anticipated.
: We have received intelligence that King Cornelius has assigned General Wallace to lead this campaign. The number of troops involved will make the course and outcome of this conflict difficult to predict.
Burnstein Commander: Hmmm...if we had secured your cooperation more quickly...perhaps we would not be facing such dire statistics...

(Travelling to a dot is one day. There are four dots from where you are to the capital. This means no detours.)

(Speaking with Hans here makes you apologize to him since you said he could visit his friends on the way back. If you didn't do all the scenes with the poison and Charlone's exam, he'd go visit them.)

Burnstein Soldier: This way, please.
: Captain...
: Well, Charlone this is what you've been waiting for. Do your best.
: Yes, sir!

: We must find a physician immediately.
: I will leave Wein with you, and go report to the King!
: Yes...please! Riviera, you just need to get a doctor and fast!
: I'll hurry...

Narrator: Charlone passed the Unicorn Knights entrance exam with splendid results. However, while this was happening, the threat of full-scale war with Rolandia grew much greater. Soon, Wein was summoned to an audience with King Eliotte.

: You called, Majesty?
: I'm sorry to bother you so soon, but I have a request of service to make of you.
: Yes, Majesty! Anything!
: Based on the testimony you provided, we're pursuing Minister Schneider's messenger. Unfortunately, he has eluded capture thus far. I therefore request that you seek out the real criminal in this matter.
: Real criminal? But we saw Minister Schneider break the dam.
: It may have appeared that way, but we believe that the messenger may be traveling with another that is impersonating Minister Schneider. Since most of our force is engaged in the battle with Rolandia, we have precious few resources to devote to this task of utmost importance. I therefore wish you to seek out the impostor and to uncover the shadow organization that is directing their actions.
: I shall do my best, Majesty!
: Xenos and Riviera have consented to accompany you, providing any assistance you may require. Here...I have also allocated monies for your expenses...

: As soon as you learn anything of import, please relay it here!
: Your Majesty!
: You are Charlone, right? On what business have you come?
: Yes, I am Charlone Claudius of the Unicorn Knights. However, I wish to request permission to accompany Wein in this matter.
: What do you have to say regarding this, Julia?
: I believe Charlone will be a tremendous asset in this investigation. I also believe that the experience she gains while investigating this matter will be beneficial to the Unicorn Knights.
: Very well, then. For the time being, I will allow you to accompany Wein.
: Thank you so very much, Majesty!
: Hooray! The gang's all together again!
: There's no time for celebration. We have work to do. Let's go.
(And that is how we found out that Max didn't break the dam. Very anticlimactic. )

: The war was concluded a year ago! Why is it breaking out again?
: Who would do such a thing? What purpose could more killing serve?
: Hey, I think our good Minister really thinks we're criminals!
: Max... ...I know how much he hates war. This must be weighing heavily on him.
: Well then, let's find the criminal responsible for setting this whole thing off and stop this mess before it gets any worse!
: Max will understand once we find the truth!
(At this point, the game becomes rather non-linear. If you know what you're doing, you can go straight to where the correct information about the criminal is, and catch him without doing any other events. Otherwise, you go to every town and gather information until you piece it all together, and there's character events scattered about everywhere. We'll be visiting every town starting by going to Clain and ending up north in Valmie for the character events, and I'll show the important gathered information.)

(Wein congratulates Charlone on passing the exam here, and Charlone offers to help out Wein when he needs it. Awww.)

(Ohhhh yeah! This gem, Mind Growth, and Nerve Growth are other steps in making breakable characters. This one is good for melee characters, the other two are good for mages. A Muscular Growth will do fine for Hans, since he gets a lot of kills, which means a lot of experience.)

: So, uh, where do we start looking?
: Hmmm...
: Wait! Someone approaches...

: (Well, I guess that settles the question of who got the good looks in her family. Woof!)
Olivia: Riviera, what are you doing here?
: I was just wondering the same thing about you. I'm quite surprised to see you here...
Olivia: Why should you be surprised? I came to search for you when you didn't return home.
: I wasn't in danger...but I can see where I might have caused concern. Ah, if you'll all excuse me, I need to talk with my sister privately.
: That's fine. We'll just wait here.
: I won't be long. We can talk over here, Sister...
Olivia: Uh...Riviera...uh...wait...

: Why? Don't you have any brothers or sisters?
: I might but...if I do I don't know about it. I was raised in an orphanage.
: Oh...I'm sorry to hear that.
: Hey, it's not a problem. You didn't know, and I'm used to it. I just...wonder sometimes what it would be like to know your family. But hey! If I hadn't been raised in the orphanage, I wouldn't have known all the other kids I was raised with. I guess that's something...
: That's a...surprising way of looking at it. If you're not careful, I might have to revise my low opinion of you, runt.
: Heh, heh. Just wait. I'll have you eatin' out of my unwashed hand, Charlo!
: (I wish I knew where my father was...)

: It's such a nice view of the kingdom today...so clear. Now that the suspicious about us have been cleared up, we have to find the real criminal quickly. I wonder what Max is doing now. Hopefully the news of our innocence reaches the front line quickly.

: (I know how much Max hates the very idea of war. There must be a way to end this war quickly, so he can return from the front.)

: We should rest.
: Yes.
: Wein, you've gotten strong. I'm not match for you now.
: You give me too much credit. You are a much more accomplished warrior than I am.
: ... It just seems as if practice like this is useless sometimes...
: Useless? Why?
: We spend all our time building strength for battle, and yet, at the very same time, we hope for peace, which squanders our skill.

: I can't see the issue as either black or white. There are good arguments on both sides of the issue. I've certainly had my share of disagreements with you over this.
: Yes, I'm aware that the issue is more complicated than I'm making it out to be.
: What I don't understand is why you have such a strong distaste for war.
: My father was a soldier, too. He was killed in battle.
: ...
: It's not unusual for a soldier to die in battle, I know. But, when my father died, my mother's health failed soon after. It ruined her. In fact, after he died, my family's social status was ruined. War...destroyed everything I knew and loved.
: Max...
: I eventually came to realize that I had experienced something on a very personal level that many people touched by war had as well. And so I decided that, whatever the cost, war must be stopped. But my goal has evolved from merely stopping wars from starting to completely disposing of the option of war.

: A...Arieta...
: That melody...that..ocarina...
: ...
: You...remembered...
: Arieta! "Remember..."

(Wein asks why Olivia was all the way in Burnstein if she and Riviera are from Rolandia, and Riviera gives him the obvious answer that it made sense to look there, since the criminals were supposedly from there.)

(Xenos says he has bad memories of this village...)

(Staying at the inn gets you this scene where you visit the graveyard with Hans. For some reason, Xenos was there too.)

(But we can't go to that mansion, so let's move on.)

: It's getting dark. Let's make camp here for the night.
: One cozy camp, comin' right up! We're doin' s'mores tonight, right?
: We'll worry about that later, Hans. First we need a fire.
: Right. I'll gather branches.
: I'll take charge of the cooking.
: Uh, Xenos...you're cooking?
: Hey, you say that like it's a bad thing. Wait until you taste what Xenos is cooking.
: Somehow I'm not reassured.
: Why you little...

: I'll help Xenos with the cooking.
: Then I'll go gather firewood with Riviera.
: I'll pitch the tents.
: All right, Hans, let's go.
: The meal exceeded all expectations that night. Xenos achieved a degree of perfection I thought was impossible over a campfire.

: I have never had food that good prepared over a campfire.
: It was all Xenos. I didn't even help that much!
: Good help preparing the food can't be underestimated. You did your share, Wein.
: All I can say is WOW, I can't believe the food was that good!
: The secret is in preparation of dried meats. It's a family secret, actually. My grandmother taught me that rehydrating the meat is essential to making the meal enjoyable.
: So that's why you made stew from the meat!
: Yes. Another family recipe. I sauteed the fresh fish as a counterpoint to the stew. With the spices I chose, the fish was the perfect complementary side dish.
: Preach on, Brother Xenos!
: Being a mercenary is a tough life, but you're forced to sharpen your cooking skills if you want to eat well.
: Okay, I'll try cooking with Xenos!

: Am I asleep...or...or awake? This world I see...is it reality...or a dream?

: Uhhh...Arieta!
: !
: Wait!
: [Gasp!]
: Arieta, I wanted to talk to you.
: Why?
: Do you have a sister that looks very much like you?
: No...I don't.
: Well, then there's someone out there that looks just as you do! In fact, I saw that person with my own eyes!
: No...the person you saw was me.
: I...It was you?

: But Arieta...
: Wein...don't! ...don't get any closer to me! I...oh, I just can't...
: Arieta!

: Grrrrrr...

: Don't worry, I won't hurt her! Please, move aside and let me pass!
: I won't do that...
: You...you can talk? Well, talk fast...she's getting away! Why won't you step aside?
: The sight of you confuses her emotions. Just the fact that you exist saddens her.
: I make her sad?
: Yes. It is my duty to protect her from pain, regardless of the source.
: [Sigh] Arieta...

(The Student looking for the manuscripts gives us Story #8 for safekeeping.)

(Going around the village with Hans shows that a year ago he was a potato thief. He gets off the hook by promising to spread the word of the farmer's tasty potatoes.)

(This boy's hobby is to find half-dead people and bring them to the inn! Let's go visit the half-dead man he found.)

(Sad story here. This man was travelling with Wein's father when they were attacked by marauders. Wein's father protected this guy with his life...so yeah, Wein's father = dead. Surprisingly, Wein takes it rather well. The marauders seemed to know Wein's father, too. We'll be visiting this man again later.)

(Reading this allows us to send people to open up shops here. Well, you can only send certain people, but finding them and telling them this information opens up the best shops in the endgame.)

(Hans finally gets to visit his friends at the orphanage )

Pietro: But...the Unicorn Knights aren't the Imperial Knights...
: Well, that is true, but the Unicorn Knights are a Squadron specially created to assist the Imperial Knights. [Sigh] Pietro, I'm working to keep my promise to you. Now it's time for you to do the same for me.
Pietro: But...
: By the time I actually become an Imperial Knight, it might be too late to heal you. You have to do the surgery now.
Pietro: Well...you are almost there. Okay, I'll do it! But you're not getting out of the promise to become an Imperial Knight! Unicorn Knights don't count! They're girls.
: Oh, Pietro...

: So, how was your brother?
: He'll be fine now. He's agreed to have the surgery.
: I'm glad to hear that.
: I can't thank you enough for helping me. You're as much a part of his recovery as I am.
: Hey, what about me?! If I wasn't pushin' you, I bet you woulda given up!
: Don't press your luck, Hans.

: F...father!
: Just where do you think you're going?
: I'm going to fulfill my dut...
: Nonsense. There is no need to serve in such a utilitarian fashion any longer. You're a Unicorn Knight now.
: But, Father! Regulations state that...
: Regulations have nothing to do with this. I shall use my influence to release you from this duty. Now that you have achieved the next level of service, it no longer suits you or this family to associate with...these types.
: But, Father! You were the one who encouraged me to sign up in the beginning! I can't...abandon my assignement.
: That was then, this is now. Charlone, this kingdom is at war. The danger of losing your life with this expendable Squadron increases with each passing day. I won't hear another word of dissent. You are staying here. I shall see to that!
: Father! I can scarcely believe that I've heard those words from my father's own lips...
: Well, Wein. Looks like we're gonna be travelin' lighter and quieter. What do we do now?
(Oh, come on, Hans. Was that really necessary?)

: I think you should do as you please, Charlone.
: Captain...
: I cannot force you to honor your duty and disobey your father. That is a decision only you can make.
: ...right.
Butler: Enough debate. You should rest here for the night...

: Of course. Father will not be pleased, however he has no choice but to accept it. I won't run from this, even if my life is in danger.
: So, are you ready?

: Yes, Captain!
: Good. Let's go, then!

(Charlone apologizes for how her father acts, Wein answers...)

(Aww, so cute.)

(Well, guess where we're going next?)
