Myth II: Chimera

Part 14: The Fiend

The Fiend

So this is it people- the final showdown for Myth 2: Chimera. We’re headed into the lair of Cartucke, a demon with really little or no characterization at all. We DO know that he’s a demon, though, and aren’t they all bad? We have Kyrilla on our side now, and her merry band of brigands. What could go wrong?

I went back over the source video frame-by-frame, and I did not see what killed Xander77. Or that he had started to wind up to throw a bomb. I think the game just decided to screw me at that moment. That happens a lot with dwarves.

So that’s it. I don’t really like the ending. Turning Fenris and Kyrilla to stone came off fairly lame, as they weren’t developed enough as characters for their deaths to have any impact. The Bungie-created Myth games kept you emotionally invested because of the narrator’s dry, hopeless commentary on a word steadily and inevitably being overrun by the Dark in spite of the Light’s marginal efforts. Victory was obtained through desperation, and there was always a heavy cost to pay. In Chimera, we never really know what the stakes are. I get that Cartucke is a demon, but seriously, what’s so bad about him? I mean that relatively- it’s not like Balor or Soulblighter were chumps, but Cartucke just stands there and takes it as you hack him down.

That’s not to say that Chimera was bad, it’s not; it’s just really unpolished. And for a fan-made expansion, that’s OK! The maps were well-made, the addition of persistent heroes was at least interesting, half of the voice acting was good, and Badlands took the time to re-skin some of the graphics and create good level-introduction art. Definitely worth you time.

We met Mahir, the creepy shadow men that are so totally cheep.

I hope you enjoyed this! Sorry for my update schedule going to crap, but I was doing my best. That makes for a little over a year straight of Myth for me, so I’m taking a break. I’ll have a new LP up soonish, it just will be something other than Myth.
