Part 19

"So you're going to the Ruins?"

Is Arthur talking about that memory box that killed the old visions? If so, why would he be fucking around with it?

Can we talk about the ending? Why did the Edgar copy disappear and reappear with Freia at the base of the tower? How did he go from being fused with Freia to lying in a pool of his own blood in a white room with Freia's broken glasses clutched in his hand? Did he actually hear the real Edgar's memory box? Or was that just a cutscene thing? Why did the real Edgar's skeleton have hair?

Earlier I posed the question, "why did Edgar lose his memory", and Dorroile gave a pretty good answer [that it was the result of the battle between the protagonist and Edgar that caused him to lose his memory]. But what I didn't say about that cutscene was more important. Edgar lost his memory, but woke up with the same memory of the Ruins that every other vision had. Meaning that he was no different, just another Vision. That's a pretty good little detail, I think.

You can also infer from that cutscene as to why the phantom dust was erasing everyone's memory. It was Edgar's will for his copy to regenerate the world, but his copy was really cynical and instead wanted to destroy the world. Because he had the ability to manipulate the phantom dust, he used it to try to destroy everything, including every vision's memory. That's the explanation that I think we're supposed to deduce.

Edgar still had his hair so we knew it was him, duh. Gosh. Use your noggin!

As for the ending, I got the feeling this Edgar cycle has been going on for a looooong time. With the latest Edgar clone trapped in a box for X amount of time, things started to to deteriorate and everyone completely forgot details about themselves... including Edgar!

As for how Edgar is at the base of the tower again, well, when I think you killed Demented Freia they fell to the bottom, shattering all the not-Edgar stuff off of him and leaving him a broken mess, staring at the memory box machine. The Protagonist figures out where actual Edgar's final resting place is from said memory box, goes and finds it, and shuts everything down.

Does this mean the world will deteriorate? Or was that just the ego of one man?? Find out next time on Phantom Dust Tw- oh... oh. Aww.

Damn, that was a really good ending. I have to admit, i was actually kind of already expecting Edgar to be a vision himself, due to his "I'm going back to the lost me" line. From that point on i knew something was up with him.

As for the ending questions - Edgar is a magic ghost, whatever happens to him is probably just Ghost Magic. Skeledgar had hair because it was just a toupé. And from the looks of it, Edgar DID hear the last memory box. He certainly looked pretty shaken about it. There's definitely this look of growing realization on him as he understands the implications of what he's hearing. In fact, you could even theorize that he died BECAUSE he realized he was just a vision, like the Visions leaders did. Granted, Freya/Edgar/Nanashi were all "special" or whatever, but considering his injuries it wouldn't be surprising if he was weakened enough to be dissolved by that.

I think Edgar made himself a new Freya because the original wasn't as 'compliant' as he would've liked. All that time without him and Nanashi probably altered her point of view. Hell, the last fight against her basically amounted to a case of suicide-by-cop.
