Introduction
The Chimeran threat began in Russia. The origin of the virus is unknown, but its effects were devastating and swift. In the 1930s reports of biological experiments began leaking out of Russia, then reports of villages destroyed overnight, then entire cities. We feared the Russians had developed a weapon of unparalleled power. The truth was far worse.
The Chimera stayed sealed within Russia for over a decade. Then, in 1949, they launched an attack that overwhelmed all of Europe in a matter of weeks. For several months we thought England was safe. But in October of 1950 the Chimera burrowed under the channel. We had prepared for them, but in three months time the war was lost.
We abandoned the cities to the Chimera and retreated to scattered military bases and outposts. The Chimera had won.
On July the 11th, 1951, the Americans launched on assault on the Eastern coast of England. On the second wave of that assault was a Sergeant named Nathan Hale. The actions of that Ranger have become a matter of both scrutiny and myth.
What follows are the known events of his life from July 11th to July the 14th, the day he was last seen.

What's this game about?
Resistance is one more classic example of "lone man saves the world" FPS gaming. The Chimera, a mysterious monstrous force originating from Russia, has wiped out all of Asia and Europe with the exception of a few pockets of resistance in Britain. The US, having adopted extreme isolationism in the early 1900s, reluctantly sends aid at the last possible moment. We will be playing as Sargent Nathan Hale of the United States Army Rangers 1st Regiment. The US government sealed its borders in 1950 and took possession of newspapers and radio stations, and then they decided to not tell their soldiers anything before dropping them into Chimera-infested Britain as part of Operation: Deliverance. The first wave dies horribly, and we are part of a second wave of troops.
Since most people either don't own a PS3 or bought a PS3 long after Resistance was old news, I feel that this game is often overlooked.
Will you be posting extras?
Information about weapons, chimera, and vehicles periodically show up in the options menu as you come across things. Intel documents are scattered throughout the game and can be picked up for extra story fluff. I will be showing off all of these in the thread.
You're using a lot of weapons that I didn't see when I played this game.
The developers decided for some reason that it would be cool for about half of the weapons to only be available after you've beaten the game once. We'll be obtaining and using all of them as they become available.
HEY SO YOU SHOULD TRY TO DEFEAT CHAPTER 12 WITH ONLY MELEE.
This is not a challenge thread. It's true that I'm playing on the hardest difficulty, but that's only because it spawns the most enemies. It's more entertaining to watch 30 exploding chimera than 5 exploding chimera. The goal of this LP is to be somewhat informative and show off some of the really cool weapons that you can use in this game. That's not to say that challenges are unwelcome, I probably just won't use them.
Can you show us where the intel documents are located in each level?
I could, but that would potentially require a lot more work than it's worth. Once you've picked up an intel document, you can never pick it up again unless you create a new profile, which means playing the game from the beginning. If it turns out that I've hosed up a recording after I've picked up an intel document, then I'd have to play through the game again just for that piece of footage. Sorry, you'll just have to settle for screenshots of the documents.
If this game takes place in the 50s, then why do the humans have such advanced weaponry?
There is evidence suggesting that the US and Europe new about the Chimera threat years in advance, leaving them plenty of time to dump money into weapons research. Also, about half of the weapons that we use are Chimeran weapons that we just pick up off of corpses. See the alternate history section below.
What are the Chimera?
Who knows? The timeline leaves a lot of clues, but they all point in different directions. Are they aliens that came here during the Tunguska event? Are they subterreanean mole people? Are they a bizarre Russian experiment? Are they ancient spirits? Are they the spirit of communism, channeled by Lenin when he was exiled to a labor camp in Siberia?
They're aliens
Weapons (in the order in which we acquire them)
M5A2 Carbine - Starting Weapon and standard assault rifle, pretty accurate even in full auto mode and good for gunning down Hybrids or if you just don't have any other ammo. It has a 50-round clip and you can carry an additional 150 rounds. The grenade launcher attached to it holds three rounds and is helpful for small groups of enemies, having a smaller blast radius than the standard frag grenade. Ammo for this is everywhere, even deep within Chimera territory.
Reaper Pistols - These two rapidly firing handguns automatically target enemies that have been in your crosshairs at least once. Primary fire for the right pistol, secondary fire for the left. The melee damage for each pistol is the same as all other weapons, so they're awesome for melee damage because you can hit twice as fast. This is the first example of a weapon that is unavailable on your first playthrough.
Bullseye - This is the primary Hybrid weapon. It is stronger than the Carbine but much less accurate. It holds a 70 round clip with 210 rounds in your bag. The secondary fire is a homing tag; tag an opponent and your shots will home in on them, allowing you to fire from behind cover. You can also use the tags for a "Bullseye Trap", where you set the tag on a solid surface, fire rounds onto it, and then tag any opponent, causing the collected rounds to instantly seek out the new target.
The Rossmore 236 Combat Shotgun is your standard FPS shotgun, brought to you by the British Army. Secondary fire is a double shot and tends to knock enemies off of their feet, but the kickback to you is larger. This is a great weapon for dense packs of Crawlers, sometimes wiping out the entire group in a single shot. Ammo tends to be sparser for this weapon than the Bullseye and the Carbine.
The Auger is another Chimeran weapon, this one carried by Steelheads. Its rounds are stronger than the Bullseye's, although they travel slower. The greatest benefit of this weapon is its ability to shoot through matter, whether it's a wall, solid rock, or a metal barricade. The targeting reticule lights up red when there's an enemy, so fire away! The projectile will create a bright spot at the exit point, giving you (or enemies) time to get out of the way. The secondary fire deploys a force barrier, a large rectangle that stops all projectiles except for Auger rounds. It suffers from a smaller ammo capacity, but it does more damage and ignores cover, so it's still a valuable addition to the arsenal.
The L23 Fareye is a fancy sniper rifle with an adjustable zoom. It can take out Hybrids, Steelheads, and most other Chimeran strains with a single shot to the head or neck. You can only carry 12 rounds for it, so use them wisely. The secondary fire slows down time for a few seconds, until the gauge in the bottom right is full. This lets you use the Fareye for all sorts of tactics for which you wouldn't normally use a sniper rifle.
The Arc Charger fires a short-range burst of energy that does pretty good damage. The secondary fire allows the energy to jump to multiple targets with increasing damage after each jump. This is great for clusters of enemies, but it means that you'll end up killing any opponents in the rear of a group first thanks to the increased damage after jumping. The Arc Charger doesn't require reloading, but firing it too fast will cause it to overheat. It's perfect for killing Leaper groups, and still somewhat useful for Hybrids if you just use the primary fire. This weapon is not available on your first playthrough.
The XR-005 Hailstorm was developed by the US; the XR designation means that it is an experimental prototype, likely only assigned to black ops teams, explaining why we find it deep within Chimeran territory. It fires a fast stream of bolts that bounce off of surfaces and even opponents, making it useful for cramped areas. It does decent damage, maintains a steady rate of fire, and has a good ammo capacity, but ammunition is rare. The secondary fire consumes the remainder of the weapon's current clip to launch a hovering turret that will fire upon enemies. Holding secondary fire determines the distance to which the turret will travel. This is the best reason to use this weapon, since you can launch a turret and then switch to another weapon while it unloads into the enemy.
Tje XR-003 Sapper is another experimental weapon of US design. This one launches fleshy globules that act like proximity mines. The damage is low, but if you launch enough of them then you're sure to kill something. Secondary fire will detonate a cluster of mines, causing them to deal much more damage than they would otherwise. This weapon has its uses. Laying mines in front of an advancing enemy is a valid tactic, and laying mines right outside of a batch of Leaper Pods will nullify any threat they may have posed. It's also useful for blasting an enemy out from cover if you're close enough.
The L11-2 Dragon shoots a stream of blue flames at targets, dealing damage to groups of enemies. It's very effective against all of the smaller Chimera strains and is usually a good choice for close to mid range combat. And best of all, the Dragon consumes fuel very slowly and you can carry a ton of it. Secondary fire lets you charge up and release a clump of flames that won't dissipate for awhile, but the clump tends to be small and ineffective. Charging with secondary fire consumes fuel very quickly, but with enough charging it can instantly take out a Steelhead, whereas you'd need to bathe it with flames for a few seconds if just using primary fire. Note, this is yet another weapon that isn't available on your first playthrough for some reason.
The LAARK is an all-purpose weapon, taking out infantry and larger targets with ease. It holds two rockets per "clip" with an additional two in reserve. Primary fire launches a rocket, which does high damage and can wipe out large groups of enemies; it takes 2-3 rockets to take out a Stalker. Holding secondary fire stops the rocket in midair, allowing you to do a few things with it. First, it will rotate to aim wherever you point your laser reticule while you hold secondary fire. Second, it will launch a mini-rocket every time that you press the primary fire while holding secondary fire. These mini-rockets deal decent damage and don't have a large blast radius, but they will home in on the nearest target! When used this way, the primary rocket will still deal full damage, making it a great way to deal with a pack of enemies from behind cover or even a much larger target. One rocket is sufficient to destroy any target if you are at all competent at using the mini-rockets (note: I am incompetent).
The Splitter is a Chimeran weapon and is only available after the game has been beaten once. It fires a big slug that does about the same damage as a LAARK rocket but it doesn't explode. Secondary fire splits the round into 3 smaller sections, and you can do this several times to increase the surface area of the shot. This allows the Splitter to function as a high-powered long range shotgun. Unfortunately, the smaller projectiles don't do enough damage to be effective for killing small targets like Hybrids, so it's really only useful against larger targets like Stalkers and Titans or the occasional Steelhead. On the plus side, you can carry a ton of ammo for the Splitter, so it's a great substitute for the LAARK in a pinch.
The Bullseye Mk II works exactly like the Bullseye, but it shoots blue balls instead of red and deals more damage. I'm not sure exactly how much, maybe double or triple? It's a great upgrade to an already awesome weapon.
Grenades
Frag Grenade - High radius blast, it's effective against most groups of enemies. We throw this at things that we want to go away.
The Hedgehog grenade is sometimes thrown by Hybrids if you're trying to use cover. Once it lands, it will float into the air and shoot sharp spines in all directions.
The Backlash Grenade is easily the greatest weapon in our inventory, and it's only available after your first playthrough. It creates a large sphere which will absorb and reflect incoming fire from any Chimera in the area, and it deals significant damage over time to any Chimera caught in the sphere. A single backlash grenade can end battles, giving you temporary invulnerability and wiping out every Chimera that might be stupid enough to fire at you (all of them). A more accurate name might be the God Mode Grenade.
Air-Fuel Grenades stick to surfaces and release a nice green flammable cloud of vapor for a second before they explode. Chimera, being vulnerable to heat, are particularly devastated by this weapon. They're not quite as rare as backlash grenades, but still pretty uncommon. It has a larger blast radius than the other grenades, and the fact that you can stick one to any surface makes it a valuable addition to our arsenal.
Vehicles
UAV17 Hawk Transport - This is the VTOL craft that came from significant US development from Tesla's original VTOL plans. You'll see a lot of these blowing up in the first level.
The M-12 Sabertooth has infinite ammo and can run over enemies. Don't bother with its Gatling gun because you will always be more effective by using the main cannon. By the time that the Gatling gun kills a single enemy, you'll have been able to fire the main cannon at least once.
Chimeran Dropships can't really be destroyed by the player, they just show up and drop off various Chimera before flying off someplace else.
The P-117 Kingfisther Transport is used by the Brits as a slightly less advanced version of the US U/AV-17 Hawk Transport. It is still quite capable at aerial reconnaissance and troop transportation.
Stalkers are the walking tanks that we've been hearing about since the first chapter. They are quadrupedal walking death machines with a glaring design flaw on their rear end. Their armaments include a heavy machine gun and partially homing missiles that can be launched over cover. They're mostly deployed for antiaircraft purposes but do just fine against tanks and infantry. Ots power core is exposed in the rear, so just let it get distracted and swivel around before you open fire on it. Three clips of Carbine ammo into the power core will usually destroy a Stalker.
The Burrower is what the Chimera use to dig their underground tunnels. It can carry a few dozen troops in its head, allowing the burrower to burst into a base and immediately deploy a large number of Chimera.
The LU-P Lynx is a British jeep with a machine gun on the back. Sadly, someone else is always hogging the gun, so you only ever get to drive or sit in the passenger seat, which is even less fun than driving.
Goliaths are the largest vehicles in the Chimeran arsenal. Not only are they ridiculous enormous walking artillery platforms that carry infinite missiles, but they also carry the spires that everyone keeps talking about, allowing them to infect legions of humans with the Chimeran virus. They are vulnerable to smaller vehicles, like Stalkers, that are able to take advantage of the Goliath's poor mobility.
Chimera Breeds
Hybrids - Standard footsoldier, carries a Bullseye rifle. Fairly unintelligent, can be brought down pretty easily. They're everywhere.
Crawlers are the vector for the Chimeran virus and have been known to overwhelm entire cities in a manner of minutes. These are storyline enemies that are never encountered during gameplay. It's a surprise that the Chimera don't just unleash these everywhere and infect all of the humans at once, but maybe they're in short supply or something.
Leapers are the evolved form of Crawlers. In later levels, we'll find their pupa pods. They tend to come from all directions and are best dealt with by area effect weapons. They have very little health, but there are always many of them. You'll notice that sometimes they dodge out of the way of bullets.
Menials are harmless at a distance, but if they grab you then you will immediately lose a quarter of your health. If you don't shake them off right away, you'll continue to take damage as they repeatedly bite you. They serve as the Chimeran slave labor force, carrying energy spheres to and from various places and carting around bodies for conversion. They soak up a fair amount of damage, less than a Hybrid, and can be annoying during a large firefight.
Cocoons are a stage of the Chimeran birthing process that take place after infection. You can't damage them in the early levels, so there's no point in trying.
Howlers are larger breeds that look like they're half horse and half large dog. They're very resilient and fast. It will take you nearly a full clip of shotgun shells or bullseye rounds to take them down. They have a large turning radius while they're running, so they're not terribly difficult to dodge. They can pin you down if you're careless, which will take away most of your health.
Steelheads are heavily armored, more evolved forms of Hybrids. They take tons of damage and are often seen leading Hybrids into battle. They carry the Auger, allowing them to shoot through cover, including the Auger's force barrier. Take them out quickly, before they run behind something preferably.
Titans are the largest humanoid variety of Chimera, requiring the fusing of several human bodies into a single monstrous frame. They never wear armor, yet their hides are so thick that they can take multiple rockets and come out unscathed. Their weapon of choice is a large rocket launcher that partially homes, dodging it is tricky. Titans can also step on you for bonus excitement. They're difficult enough when they're alone, but they sometimes come with an escort of Hybrids just to make your job extra hard.
Slipskulls are annoying midget Chimera that use Reaper Pistols, but sadly don't drop any ammo. They'll jump around from surface to surface and try to snipe at you. They tend to blend in very well with the rest of this very grey game, but the giant red dot that appears in front of you while they aim lets you know where they are.
Leaper Pods carry unborn Leapers. When you get close enough to them, or whenever the game feels that it's convenient, several pods will burst open at the same time, releasing a swarm of Leapers for you to deal with. They're immune to small arms fire, but can be destroyed by any grenade, explosive, or flame round. The flamethrower is good for removing them, but it's often just as easy to let them burst and destroy the Leapers that come out with the Arc Charger.
Gray Jacks are matured Hybrids that are nearing the end of their lives. As they grow larger, their cooling apparatus begins to fail, causing them to shed their armor and develop a tough, leathery hide. They're very fast and hit very hard, but can be easily knocked off balance with small arms fire or a quick jab with the butt of a gun. They're deadly if they're allowed to hit you, but if you keep them off balance then they're harmless. A single Fareye shot to the head also does the trick.
Carriers sometimes float around high above a battle. You can never kill them, and they never interact with you. They look mechanical, but they are in fact just another breed of Chimera that works behind the scenes.
Hardfangs are juiced up Hybrids that carry the Arc Charger. They wear heavier armor and move a little faster, but the short range of the weapon they carry makes them harmless at a distance. One isn't a problem, but be a bad experience since they'll beeline straight toward you, possibly before you can kill all of them.
Rollers are matured Leapers. They move a good deal faster and can take more damage, but the Arc Charger makes quick work of them. They'll also do more damage by vomiting acid on your feet.
Widowmakers are giant Chimera spiders that will wreck your shit in an instant. They can remove half of your health by kicking you, and they launch huge globs of the same fleshy explosive stuff that comes out of the Sapper, but it's even deadlier. Take them out ASAP with the LAARK's secondary fire.
Advanced Hybrids are stronger, faster, and better armored than all other Hybrids. They are the defenders of the Chimeran towers. They carry the Bullseye Mk II and can take a direct rocket blast without dying, although well-placed grenades still dispose of them. They always attack en masse and are often supported by Steelheads.
Angels are the top of the Chimeran food chain, able to control and command the other breeds. We encounter one in a cutscene at the end of Chapter 15. When you finally get to fight them, you already have so many weapons in your arsenal that they turn out to be pretty easy. You can take them out with the Bullseye if you're patient, or you can launch Splitter and LAARK rounds at them until they go down. Their only attack will be launching some spines at you that emit a noxious cloud that will damage you as long as you stand in it. Just keep moving and shooting and it will die.
At the pause screen for (almost) every level, there is a faint Morse Code message playing in the background. It's easy to mistake it as flavor noise, but if you take the time to decode the messages they might range from the meaningless to the enlightening. There are also some dead US black ops soldiers that will have morse code playing out of their radio. The messages range from useless to enlightening.
At first I wondered whether I should give the task of decoding the messages to the thread, but then I realized that decoding a bunch of Morse Code isn't fun for anyone. I'll be including the messages with updates. The messages make the most sense if you read them as though they are sent at the end of the mission in which they are received, or even at the beginning of the following mission. For instance, Ch13 is when we're cut off in Northern Command, but the message referring to this event is actually in Chapter 12.

The Alternate History
You can view all of the potentially relevant historical events in the altered timeline. In fact, I do recommend browsing the timeline because it's very well done. Here are some of the highlights

* August, 1914 - The Great War begins between Germany and the Allied Forces of Britain and France
* March, 1917 - US President Woodrow Wilson demands that the German Navy cease unrestricted submarine warfare. Germany stops targeting American ships, but continues engaging British vessels without warning. Wilson requests that Congress declare war on Germany, but strong isolationism prevails and America does not enter the war.
* October, 1917 - In Russia, the Socialist Bolshevik party is dissolved and its leader, Vladimir Lenin, is sent to a labor camp in eastern Siberia after a failed coup.
* June, 1919 - The Treaty of Versailles is signed between the Allied Powers and Germany. The Great War is officially over.
* September, 1921 - Russia cuts off all communication with the outside world. A concrete barrier, the Red Curtain, is erected along the European border and is longer than the Great Wall of China.
* August, 1926 - A slick flowing from the Volga river in Russia kills all marine life in the Sea of Azov. Several villagers die as well. Ukranian Scientists detect quantities of Radon 1000 times normal.
* October, 1929 - "Green Tuesday", the Dow Jones Average falls 5% in one hour from fear of the Smoot-Hawley tariff. President Herbert Hoover gives a radio address promising to veto the act, thus sparing global trade from crippling taxation. The Dow Jones recovers its losses by the end of the next day.
* August, 1930 - Environmental instability causes previously unseen weather patterns moving from Russia. Heavy rains are directed over the American Great Plains as a consequence.
* September, 1930 - Germany's recovery from the Great War to a full member of the European Trade Union solidifies support for the Weimar Republic. The Nazi party's extreme agenda is ridiculed and marginalized.

* January, 1941 - Britain begins constructing five new military bases. Photos are printed showing that the base in London is entirely subterranean. A press blackout is immediately enacted.

* August, 1948 - British intelligence agents in the Ukraine survey Russian radio broadcasts. After six weeks, the only signals heard are looping propaganda programs encouraging, "Brotherhood, strength, and fortitude... in the face of the Angry Night." There are no new broadcasts from over 12,000 stations serving nearly 100 million citizens. Two days before the survey is complete, the listening station receives powerful electromagnetic radiation emanating from Russia. The powerful signals melt the receivers and five men are electrocuted.
* April, 1949 - Mysterious meetings occur between King Edward VIII and the highest levels of American government, with the king making requests for aid.
* September, 1949 - Meteorologists warn citizens to prepare for an especially harsh winter as global cooling continues.
* December, 1949 - The Chimera break through the Russian wall and sweep into Europe. Europe's invasion contingencies prove to be inadequate as the Chimera roll over static defenses. There is an inexplicable lack of refugees from cities taken by the Chimera. Cargo ships begin evacuating Britain to Australia. Over the next four months, almost 300,000 people are saved, mostly women and children, and Britain is left under martial law.

* October, 1950 - When the Chimera burrow into British Central Command, the River Thames is rerouted directly into the base. 14,000 soldiers drown.
* January, 1951 - British troops find piles of charred bodies. Further investigation leads to the discovery of savage humans seemingly aligned with the Chimera. The US decides to intervene and sends a major Ranger force to York.
