Part 13: A Harmonica Duet

– A Harmonica Duet

My apologies, but it’s another short update this week. Free time is getting harder to come by. And I’ll be travelling next week, so there won’t be a normal update. I should be able to put together some videos to ease the pain.

Last time, we were confronted with the opportunity to meet Harmonica in a dark alley. This leads to a choice that must be made.

For the purposes of the main plot, we’ll be taking the “good guy” route, but I’ll explore the alternate paths a little.

Tell Max that Harmonica wants to meet in the alley.

It’s too good to be true. It must be a trap. Stall him. I’ll scramble anyone I can find. Go!

Milkovsky’s losing it. He actually cleared you for field work?

What do you want?

Procat has their eyes on you. Of course, we thought you were harmless.

Now? You’re not so harmless. You caught Ying. Pretty soon you could have us all nailed. Unless I nail you first. Of course, we could just let the Agency do it for us. You’re about to take a major fall back at Langley. They’re going to finger you for the mole.

Finger me for the mole?

Let’s just say you’ll soon be filthy rich. Till the Agency gets a whiff, that is. Of course, we can hide the scent if you’re a team player.

I’m going to give you a choice. An easy one if you know what’s good for you. Join Procat or die.

Join Procat? Why should I join Procat?

Think about it. This is the game. The way it was meant to be. No pencil-pushing, no pain-in-the-ass Senate subcommittees, just action – and plenty of it. And more cash than you’ve ever imagined.

No thanks – I’d rather die than join Procat.

**Alarm lights flash, sirens can be heard**

Nice work.

**Harmonica escapes, Max runs in with two cops**

Sorry, Thorn, it took longer than I thought. Scan the area just in case. It shouldn’t take long, one way or another.

It worked. Birdsong set up a meeting with his informant. I’m en route to the stakeout. Meet me there.

So Harmonica escaped, but we found out that Thorn is getting set up to take the fall as the mole. Hopefully Max will corner him soon. In the meantime, it’s back to dealing with Birdsong.

Alternate Paths

If we neglect to tell Max and refuse to join Procat, Harmonica simply shoots Thorn. That’s not too interesting. But what if we opt to join the bad guys?

I’ve been looking for some freelance work.

There’s a document locked in Foster’s desk – third drawer from the top on the right. It’s a list of payments to local contacts for the past few months – get it. Right now. Then come back here. A friend of mine will take care of you. Pass this test, then we’ll talk.

It takes a little lock-picking, but no real trouble.

A few things can happen from here. If we take too long getting the file, Max catches Thorn in the act.

Step away from the desk. You send me out to look for Harmonica and then you sneak back in here to steal more secrets? How could you sell out your own country? You’re under arrest. I want you out of my sight.

Jail time, game over.

If Thorn gets the file and gets back to the alley:

Get in the van, Thorn.

Put the file in the slot.

**Hissing noise**

Listen carefully, Thorn. You are an idiot.

Death. Game over. So no real chance to join Procat.

If Thorn gets the file, but takes too long to get back to the alley, Procat is gone. This allows us the interesting chance to examine the file. There’s nothing here that affects the plot, just background fluff and inside jokes. Worth reading though.

Next time on Spycraft – The Great Game

Thorn and Foster track down Birdsong’s informant and tangle with Kneecaps.
