Part 16: Red Square Dancing

– Red Square Dancing

It’s time for the (almost) final showdown. President Brooks is in Moscow to give a speech, and Harmonica has him in his sights.

Chopper to plane to Moscow. Sterling meets Thorn on the runway.

Congratulations, Thorn. President Brooks and I just landed ourselves. Let’s go aboard and see if we can’t get him to see reason, hmm? Discretion is the better part of… survival.

Mr. President, may I introduce Thorn?

Welcome aboard. It’s good to finally put a face to the name. This de-nuke deal’s been in the works for 2 years. If we don’t get these Russian missles tied up, they’re going to be sold to the highest bidder. What’s more, without this treaty Polyakov certainly will lose the election.

There must be some reasonable—

I appreciate the concern, but I don’t see any alternative.

Yes, but—

No more buts! I let this treaty slide by, and tomorrow any two-bit dictator with enough cash will be pointing a missle at our front yard. I’ve whittled things down as much as I can. All I have to do is go up on that stage, speak for two minutes, sign the papers, and leave. I’m sure Thorn can get the job done. If not, the secret service will have to. Now, if you don’t mind, I have a speech to prepare.

Listen Thorn, this is where the rules of the game change. We’re playing for big stakes, the biggest. These are the security maps of the ceremony site that you wanted. Do whatever you need to do.

Hey Thorn, are you there? It’s me, Jaimie. All the way from the States. You shouldn’t be surprised to hear me; I’ve got this earpiece working like a charm. If you’re going to get a line on this Harmonica character, you’ll need help. Call up your PDA.

Sometime I even amaze myself. Welcome to Red Square, Officer Thorn. You’re looking at it from few miles above.

Your PDA is also a GPS transmitter. We can track you anywhere on the globe. I’ve got our best birds honed on the square right now.

See, that’s you in green. Keep moving, and the GPS will track you. Those other blips are Secret Service agents. They’re also equipped, and patrolling their zones.

But that’s not all. I made sure the NRO boys patched us in to their electronic surveillance sats. They’ll isolate electronic signals in the area.

Perfect. OK. Here’s what you’re seeing. The yellow flashing pulses are signals in the 0-250 mHz range. The orange ones are 250-450, and the red is anything above 450 mHz. I’m not sure which ones we’re looking for. I was hoping you’d have that intel. Isolate Harmonica and take him down.

My people, this day is a day of great joy. For we throwing off the oppressive shackles of our past, and we are ushering in a new age of Russian prosperity.

Polyakov’s speech continues for a few more minutes, and then President Brooks speaks. Thorn’s job is to move through the crowd to investigate the electronic signatures and stop Harmonica. Closing the PDA brings up a crowd shot, with the option to shoot if Thorn spots Harmonica.

The game is railroaded at this point; there’s no way to check our files for information on the pulses. The player just has to remember some details.

The decoded messages suggested that the weapon Harmonica is using had a busted oscillator. Which weapon needs an oscillator, and at what frequency does it operate?

Flashback from Chapter 6

So red’s the color we want. The speeches go on for several minutes, so it’s a matter of scanning the crowd carefully.

Wait, Volpe? That name popped up in the encoded messages. He’s in on the hit.

The crowd shots are pretty standard, regardless of where Thorn is in the crowd.

Until Thorn hits the right spot.

Target is down!

Thorn, I see the Distinguished Intelligence Cross in your future. Harmonica’s taken care of, but our asses are still on the line. We still need to know who hired Procat, and ID this mole. I have to get back to President Brooks; he’s a little shaken. But thankful. He gives you full authority to find the bastards behind this, and put them out of business permanently!

The real game-changer: Brooks abandons Polyakov and backs Churbanov. The END Treaty is the most important thing. And Sterling misspelled his own name.

Thorn, I just got off the phone with Yuri’s boss. He’s agreed to send him to Yalta for your meeting with the mole. Yuri’s there to help you. Take care of business.

Next time on Spycraft – The Great Game

The final showdown in the Crimea between Thorn and the mole!

Bonus – Bad Ending

If Thorn takes too long to find Harmonica, the assassination is successful and President Brooks dies of an apparent coronary.

I’m not going to transcribe this whole video, but enjoy some charming overacting from Dennis Lipscomb (DCI Sterling). There’s another couple scenes at the beginning of the video. Enjoy them or skip to 55 seconds in. I tried chopping the video with Windows Movie Maker and it turned out dogshit.
