Part 29: - First Sin, Kyriaki

29 - First Sin, Kyriaki

(SFX: Helicopter noises)

My favourite screen of the game, I love the colour. Though there's a typo: it's supposed to be the Atlantic Ocean.

Radio: "Attention all units! This is headquarters. The doctors are on board. Requesting update on GUILT status."

"Are you ready?"

"I think so. It should be just like the simulation, right?"

"Yes, sir. What about the girl?"

"I'm ready."

"Are you scared?"

"I'm fine. I could probably handle anything, at this point! Are you still seasick, Doctor?"

"...Er... no. I can't feel it anymore. ...Probably nerves..."

(Music: Despair)

"Thankfully, he also shed some light on the Delphi organization. They operate offshore, from a large marine vessel."

"That's why they were unable to track them down."

As it is probably now apparent, Blackwell is based on the Aum Shinrikyo member Ikuo Hayashi.

Yeah yeah, okay, Atlus. ...Hayashi was one of the five men directly involved in the Tokyo Gas attack. He was a highly respected Cardiologist at Japan's Ministry of Science and Technology prior to his membership. Years into his practice, he became disillusioned with Japan's medical system, and was offered a job as a physician for Aum. He accepted, and abandoned his family. Hayashi pleased Asahara, and was granted a job as the "Minister of Health," responsible for overseeing experiments on members.

"We informed the British Navy, and it wasn't long before they located a suspicious ship. The UN just granted them permission to clear it out."

"But, Delphi's base is sure to be stocked with biochemical weapons!"

Asahara asked him personally to be a part of the team that would gas the Metro. According to his testimony, Hayashi almost fled before the attack, having a pang of conscience over what he was about to do. He allowed himself to be arrested and pled guilty at his trial, testifying that he "became a doctor to help people, but used [his] skill to inflict suffering." Having co-operated with the police and showing them where all Aum's bases of operation were, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, the only member of the attack not sentenced to death. He later apologized, wishing he hadn't been so blind to Aum's cruelty.

"They asked that we dispatch a GUILT specialist to assist them. Everyone we asked refused, though. ...What about you, Derek? You are the last one on the list."

"..!"

While Blackwell and Hayashi share similar stories following their arrests, we still haven't learned the circumstances behind Blackwell's admission into Delphi. Don't assume they are the same just yet.

"You've already done enough. We won't force you to accept. But, you might be our only hope."

"I'll do whatever I have to. If there's a disease, then it's my job to stop it. I'm going!"

"...You're right."

(..*sigh*..)

Poor Derek is pretty burned out. Stress gets to the best of us.

"Don't worry about me, Dr. Miller."

"I apologize for sending a doctor to a place like this."

"I'm here because you needed a doctor. Someone has to stop GUILT."

"That's reassuring. While you're on board, I'll have to be back here, giving orders. I'll trust your judgement out there. My soldiers are yours to command."

"..I understand. I'll be sure to let you know if anything happens."

Radio: "Attention 7th Division! We have reports of GUILT in the stern! 4th Division has secured the area. Move in! I repeat, move in!"

"This is Second Lieutentant Hughes. 7th Division is approaching! Follow me, Stiles, Thompson..."

"Understood."

"Let's go."

(Music: On the Cutting Edge of Medicine.)

"-Delphi Stronghold, stern side.-"

"The doctors are in transit. All troops report to the stern! Over and out! ...It's this way, Doctor. Follow me."

"...Understood... Angie, stay close to me and keep an eye out..."

Another reason why Hayashi was not given a lighter sentence because he was also convicted of kidnapping, torturing with drugs, and killing an innocent...:

"It's sickening..."

"In order to culture the GUILT samples effectively... they needed young tissue. ...Children! They kidnapped them from all over the world."

"How could they use innocent children like that?!"

The 7th Division, Angie, and Derek crowd around a large tank. The person in the tank opens their eyes slightly...

It is a child, no more than 4 years old.

"Those BASTARDS! They're just children!"

"...They're being used as incubators for GUILT..."

Needing GUILT to be produced in a human host, Delphi kidnapped very young children of impoverished nations, most often children or babies whose parents lived on the streets, children that would not be searched for or missed by authorities. With these "no names" at their disposal, they raised the GUILT to full strength with their body as the host, and extracted it once it was complete. When the children grew up in their tanks and became too weak to host more GUILT, they were killed and disposed of in the middle of the Pacific Atlantic Ocean, never to be discovered, never having lived.

"We have to save them! Angie, get ready to operate!"

"Yes, sir!"

A few throwaway lines in Under the Knife 2 shows us that the children we've found are the lucky ones, the only ones to be discovered. This process has been going on for decades.

"Y-You're not going to operate HERE, are you?"

"That's exactly what we're going to do!"

(Music: Patient Profile)

"Sinner 1. ...What's this for...?"

"..Were they trying to justify all of this somehow?! It's still just murder!"

As you can probably surmise, this, and some of the darker plotlines to come, was taken out of Second Opinion. It's not just the Wii version: in fact, Under the Knife 2 retcons the Sinners from being around the age of 4 to being teenagers around the age of 15.

"It's ridiculous! When I think of how many people died because of this nonsense..!"

"Let's show them that their GUILT has no place in our world!"

(Watch This Operation: Mission 6-2, S Rank.)

(Music: Gangliated Utrophin Immuno-Latency Toxin (GUILT))

This is your final test against the GUILT. They are much harder than before, and Angie will no longer step in to help you... much.

Vitals go down very fast as more lacerations appear on screen, and their attacks are more frequent and do a lot more damage.

This is the game's way of congratulating you for making it this far. Now they want to see how much have you learned. Prove yourself!

"Chiral reaction is negative. GUILT I has been eradicated. Please treat the remaining wounds, Dr. Stiles."

"...That day changed our lives forever, didn't it? These children deserve to have memories too, good and bad. Let's go."

In the video, I S Rank the mission. The only requirement is to have more than 7500 points. Here's a little secret: if you're having trouble finding the Kyriaki, if you hit the Ultrasound four times, they will always appear onscreen regardless of where you were looking.

"Be careful... He's still really weak."

"I... I understand, sir! (I can't believe it! They're amazing!)"

Next Time: More of Delphi's schemes are revealed.
