Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume

by ApplesandOranges

Part 67: Chapter 5A (2)

Last we left off, we had a meeting with the princes to get to.

And we have a battle. Sure? Why not?

...Roienburg, did you arrange for a peace meeting to be held in a dangerous glen full of monsters and have Wylfred tidy it up?

Anyway, this is just more filler, and a fairly easy one.

Our enemies of the day are Carrion Wolves, Caelanos, and Toxic Flowers. Nothing we haven't dealt with before.

I love the multipurposeness of Diminish Missile.

The Caelano is flying over the water so we can't hit it. Instead we'll just take out the other Carrion Wolf.

That went rather nicely.

Well we can weaken Caelanos' ranged attacks, they still like to hit from behind to Faze us and get gems to pull off things like this.

We get in our quick revenge in short order.

Diminish Missile saves Heugoe from what would have been a nasty gem chain.

A Toxic Flower comes down and poisons Ushio.

We haven't broken triple digits in a while; the party's not exactly configured for racking up lots of hits. Still, we're consistently getting fairly good numbers.

The last Wolf also goes down.

Once again Diminish Missile saves Heugoe's life. Caelanos are more bearable now but they're still tricky on the Sylvanglade because there's so much air they can float on to attack us. I eventually back everyone up against the wall to get it to come to us before killing it.

Last enemy's up here. Unlike the B or C route equivalents, it's just a Toxic Flower.

Foregone conclusion.

Even MORE Expert's Experiences (seriously, we have ten now), we have one new weapon here. The Moonfalx is a longsword with 155 ATK, three attacks and a 30% Holy boost. It's actually the best thing we're going to get on the A path for the rest of the chapter, so getting double Sin here is kind of very helpful. It shouldn't be that hard.

---

Of when do you speak?

My days at court, when Langrey and Kristoff were wee princelings along for the hunt.

I only hope it conjures fond memories for them as it does for me. The past is all we seem to share now.

---

He defies my truce?

Wait, didn't we kill you back in Chapter 1?

Crell Monferaigne has amassed troops in support.

My worst nightmare is come true. The brothers' feud will divide the kingdom, their barbarian consorts to be our new conquerors.

---

There's one quick scene when we go back to Veissheit.

War is begotten despite the perpetrators' wish for peace.

An irony for poets to lament, and warriors to endure. May Victory guide thy hand, and Misfortune befall thy foe.

Irony indeed.

Alright, let's go. Safety Boots on, everyone.

A tyrant who would raise arms against the will of his people has no claim to the throne!

That is the tyrant I fight to stop! The sword shall solve what words could not.

You guys have voted in Fauxnel. I don't think Ushio will be very happy to see him, so we'll sit him out for now. I equip Mireille with the Moonfalx, and keep the Ruin's Fate on Wylfred.

Oh, Chapter V boss? Let me just pull out the feather and...

...oh.

This fight can be difficult, but it's nothing we haven't dealt with before. Kristoff waits on the other side of this small map. There are seven enemies here if you don't count Kristoff, so if you're not confident in getting max Sin from him you'll have to fully kill them all. Roienburg 'joins' us on this map; as a Lancer he's more useful than Kristoff was, just make sure he doesn't kill anything for you.

Fauxnel starts off his career by Suspending the Lancer right in front of us.

Serious music time for the normal enemies, too.

Mireille wails on the Swordswoman a little. Enemies hit decently hard but not too tough, and if you have Diminish Missile and Suspend key targets you won't have too much trouble til Kristoff.

Crell soldiers, as mentioned in the C route, are resistant to Holy but weak to Darkness. Since we have Mireille for knockdowns, we can have Fauxnel use Dark Savior instead, which deals much better damage. Heugoe's weapon is also Darkness, giving him a nice damage bonus. The Moonfalx gets a slight penalty for being Holy but the high ATK score still does it well, while the Ruin's Fate is Darkness in nature as well.

Swordswoman's the first to go down.

Fauxnel Soul Crush

I really think Fauxnel's VA did a good job on his Soul Crush lines.

Also his victory pose.

Roienburg helps chip away at the hapless Lancer.

The enemy Sorcerer hits most of the group with a menu Sacred Javelin, thankfully nobody getting Stunned.

First things first, take out the Sorcerer.

Might as well also kill the Lancer before Roienburg does it.

I'd forgotten how much damage Meteor Swarm can do. It's kinda nice being able to exploit weaknesses with our Darkness-wielding men.

And Fauxnel ends his turn by Suspending the Archer. I didn't really need to since Diminish Missile would cut most of his damage, but ah well.

He doesn't suffer too long for his troubles, anyway.

The Lancer's next in line.

How unsightly! I can look no more!

Mireille just manages to eke out enough Sin here.

The Warrior hits very hard, and is probably the biggest threat here outside of Kristoff. We can quickly neuter him at least.

Doing well, doing well.

Kristoff is in action now, and sets his sights on Wylfred.

Where peace failed, war must prevail.

Oh dear, this does not bode well.

We chip very slightly at Kristoff. Kristoff's stats are similar to when he's fought on Chapter V, scaled down slightly, and he has Body of Steel. He's also still resistant to Ice and Holy, which is another reason why Wylfred has Ruin's Fate instead of the Moonfalx. Since he's a Warrior on a snowy map, a team of Cheripha/Lockswell/Fauxnel can actually run around keeping him busy for a while.

Roienburg wants to help!

Well... I guess he's not dying at least.

Fauxnel actually blocks all of Kristoff's attacks. Good jo-

-and apparently Noble Crusade is enough to kill him at full health anyway.

The last Sorcerer Suspend Motions Roienburg. I could possibly have taken out Kristoff earlier but I wanted to make sure I get double Sin, so I had to move around Kristoff to get to this guy.

Chip a little...

Then he dies.

In preparation, Fauxnel weakens Kristoff's defenses.

Now it still is very possible to do this map without a Sorcerer - even without Suspend Motion none of the enemies here are too threatening, especially if you have a Lancer with the Grasida. A Sorcerer just makes things go by a lot faster due to the large amounts of damage provided by Dark Savior on this map.

Alright, time to prepare.

Old reliable.

I've missed using this.

That damage on that final hit, son.

And done.

The Mirror Plate, Starguards and Omnicheck are all very valuable rewards here, especially for Wylfred.

---

Allow me to die here! My men gave their lives believing I would do the same. My survival dishonors their sacrifice!

Next time: A despot's dethroning.
