Part 20: Extras: Unused U.S.S.R and NATO units, part 2

U.S.S.R / NATO unit dump!

Since we've only got two missions left, now is as good as time as any to introduce some of the units we missed.

quote:

U.S.S.R amphibious APC - BTR-80: The second of the two main series of APCs fielded by the Soviet, and subsequently the Russian, army, the BTR-80's eight-wheeled configuration allows it greater strategic mobility as compared to the BMP's superior cross-country capability. Fully amphibious and NBC-protected, it's also manufactured in, and capable of being converted into, a wide variety of configurations for different mission profiles.

It's armed with an automatic cannon that can be switched to fire high-explosive incendiary rounds that are highly effective against infantry and light vehicles.

As it's designated by the game as amphibious, it can ford rivers, as well as traverse deeper waters.

U.S.S.R medium artillery - 2S1 "Gvozdika": Sporting a 122m howitzer in an enclosed and NBC-protected fighting compartment, the "Gvozdika", or "Carnation", was designed to provide the Soviet armored units with rapid and accurate fire support, and was deployed in great numbers.

It can also fire incendiary shells, capable of inflicting significant damage on enemy personel.

quote:

U.S.S.R medium helicopter - Mi-28 "Havoc": The successor to the renowned Mi-24 "Hind", the Havoc is a sleeker vehicle, sacrificing the Hind's transport capabilities for increased performance as a pure attack helicopter. It's currently the standard attack helicopter of the Russian armed forces, beating out the competing Ka-50/52.

In the game, it performs the same role as the SuperCobra or Gazelle, engaging soft targets and enemy air assets. It's armed with the R-73 Vympel AA-missile.

quote:

U.S.S.R transport helicopter - Mi-8 "Hip": Perhaps the most produced helicopter of all time, the Hip is a dependable work horse, operating in over 50 countries all over the world. Introduced in the early 60's, the design was later used to construct the Mi-24.

Unarmed and lightly armoured, the transport helicopters only job is to speedily ferry infantry to their positions, often in places inaccessible by foot or track. It has flares for self defense.

quote:

U.S.S.R truck - Ural 4320: It's a truck. What more can I say?

quote:

NATO ampibious APC - Spähpanzer "Luchs": If the bridge is blown but you need to cross, call in the German-made Luchs. It can carry a full squad of infantry like any other APC or IFV, protecting them with its 20mm automatic cannon. A special feature of the Luchs (not reflected in the game) is that it's equipped with a second, rear-facing, drivers seat, allowing it to quickly back away from danger.

Like the BTR-80, it can temporarily swap ammunition for high-explosive incendiary rounds.

As it's designated by the game as amphibious, it can ford rivers, as well as traverse deeper waters.

quote:

NATO medium chopper - SA341 "Gazelle": This french-designed helicopter is equipped with Mistral missiles for it's anti-air role, as well as posing a danger to infantry or soft vehicles. Made by Aérospatiale, at the time it incorporated some important innovations, such as the covered tail-rotor.

quote:

NATO transport helicopter - SA332 "Super Puma": This upgraded version of the SA330 Puma proved very popular when introduced, and is in use for both military and civilian purposes across the world. Like the Mi-8 it's unarmed and only minimally armored. Care is needed if you want your men to arrive in one piece!
