The Fall: Electric Boogaloo

Back in 2003, when the game wasn't even close to release, the developers already had plans for a sequel/addon, titled "Mutant City". Despite the cool title, they were pretty stingy with real information on the content. The only thing that they disclosed was their plan to add co-op/multiplayer to the game.

Think about that for a minute. I see no way how they would make that work. Or let me rephrase that : I see no good way how they would make that work.
I'm sure that this was mostly a buzzword or a really strange attempt to mash their game into the growing multiplayer market, as the idea was quietly dropped along the way.

After some time they finally made a statement on the content.

Developers posted:

features: (just a small example, more to come)
  • New chapter of the "THE FALL" epic story.
  • New enthralling , non-linear story with lots of surprises and turns
  • Dozens of new maps and creative quests
  • Day- and night-cycle effects plus lifelike daily routines for every single NPC enhance realism.
  • Simulate a living world: vegetation, animal wild-life etc.
  • 8 new party members with their own biography and new interactions
  • Over 600 weapons and items
  • Release: 2006

Sounds pretty neat, despite the press-lies in there. Epic story? Pfff!
But after the release-shitfest any mention of the sequel vanished from the net.

Let's jump to the year 2011.
Suddenly, several German gaming magazines reported that "Mutant City" would still happen, roughly seven years after the first release of "The Fall".
Apparently someone took everything that was left from the sequel, mashed it all in a blender, and made that into a game. I discovered this only due to my research for the LP and surely not because the resulting product was good or successful.

Take a look at this German trailer to know what's going on. It's kind of cool.

What you can't really understand from the trailer, is that they decided to turn this into a point and click adventure. I thought the cellphone game was a strange idea, but this?

I figured it would be neat if I pick this up and make a short bonus out of the game. But I didn't.
Wanna know why? Because I was smart enough to read the reviews.

Seriously, two independent magazines titled their review "The fail".

After some research, that involved skimming through a horrible YouTube Lp, I didn't want to spend 20$ on an adventure game with eleven unique screens and an estimated playtime of 90-120 minutes. I mean how fucking scummy can you get? They just wanted to get a little money out of the fans from back in the days and whatever people they could lure, I'm sure. Just take what's left, smash it together, put it into a new format and sell that shit. Done.

The only reason why the reviews didn't totally trash it was because the shell-shaded graphics do look nice and the VA is good. Everything else is boring and lame. I'm not the kind of person that gets mad over video games, but while reading up on this I actually got a little mad. Mostly because the people behind it were selling this as an "epic" and "gripping" sequel to the "hit" game from 2004. How can you write such blatant lies, without throwing up on your keyboard?

Let me close this travesty with a quote from a review.

"If we editors of Gbase were not games critics, but the game police, we'd have to impound The Fall - Mutant City. What was meant to be the long-awaited sequel to The Fall, borders on sheer deception. For comparison: Last Days of Gaia was a solid RPG, Mutant City however, is a classic point 'n' click adventure. You don't reboot a classic strategy game as an FPS. So why do this? The installation of Mutant City takes almost as long as the actual game. While testing, it took one and a half hours till the credits rolled. A record in the genre! And a joke for the continuation of an RPG. Therefore, we can only warn you: you should not buy this. If you still want to, make sure the place offers refunds."
