The Fall: Last Days of Gaia

by Tin Tim

Part 31: This is a cool game, you should check it out!

Now for something completely different

A few pages back we had a short discussion about other post-apoc games and how they shower you with loot in a world where everything should be scarce. Also how the wasteland stops being dangerous after you get some levels under your belt.

Well, recently I've discovered something through the "greenlight" thingy Steam has going on now.

Basically this is a turn based rouge-like with hexes and a crude charm.

You play as a guy who stumbled out of a cryo tube after the apocalypse and wants to find out what the hell is going on.
At first this may sound like a tired pitch, but this game shines because it is pretty difficult, random and has a complex player health and wounding model. The documentation on the Homepage makes it plain that no one is holding your hand and that you will die a bunch of times before you get anywhere.

The ultimate goal, for now, is to survive.

You have to manage a lot of bars and for that you need things. You have to scavenge map locations, which can lead to your death in many ways.

But dying is fun and you'll learn a bit more with each death. For instance that your starting hospital gown will not protect you from weather which leads to death by hypothermia. Or that open wounds will get infected, if not treated, and lead to death by sepsis. You can even catch cholera or diarrhea from drinking dirty water which will also lead to death.
A pretty cool crafting system will help you to make the things you need from what you can scavenge. It would be too much to describe all the nifty things you can do, and half the fun is figuring that out for yourself.

Of course it also has skills&traits which give unique skills and crafting options.

I like to run with various different builds and see how long they can stay alive.

This may seem like a complex sperglord simulator deluxe, but believe me it isn't. Try the free demo. It can also be downloaded for offline play, as it is browser-based.
I've played this an awful lot since I found it and I'm enjoying every minute of it.
To access the bigger Beta you have to put down ten bux though. At first I was hesitant because the actual content is a bit light to warrant ten bux. But after some time with the demo I feel I already got my money's worth out of that and gladly support a project with so much potential.

Also, the way the creator is presenting himself in the thread on SA gave me a lot of confidence in the project.

As it is still in development a lot of things are subject to change and improvement. But after reading the thread I saw that the creator is very willing to work with the players and has been known to implement good ideas a couple hours after they have been posted.

I don't want to convince you of anything, but only alert you to this game. I like it very much and would assume some of you might also. So swing by the THREAD and try it!

Also take a look at this neat trailer to see what the game is all about.

I'm off to find shoes, ketchup, gummi bears and a place to sleep for the night. Pray that the dogmans won't catch me!
